THIS BULLETIN IS TO IDENTIFY THE ENGINES USED AND ESTABLISH SERVICE PARTS USAGE FOR CERTAIN 1985 VEHICLES. 1985 2.8L V6 ENGINES CODED T AND 1985 2.8L V6 ENGINES CODED A USE A NEW CRANKSHAFT THAT HAS A 4MM LARGER MAIN BEARING JOURNAL AND A NEW THICK SEAL. AN EXAMPLE WOULD BE A051013TBC - A BEING THE NEW DESIGN CRANKSHAFT AND SEAL. THE NEW SEAL CAN BE SERVICED BY R &R (REMOVE AND REPLACE) OF THE TRANSMISSION AND FLYWHEEL. THIS NEW DESIGN SEAL DOES NOT REQUIRE ANY SEALER ON THE OUTSIDE DIAMETER. TO AVOIDE DAMAGE WHEN SERVICING THIS NEW SEAL, IT IS NECESSARY TO APPLY A LIGHT COATING OF OIL TO THE OUT SIDE AND INSIDE AREAS OF THE SEAL. REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE THICK AND THIN SEALS ARE IN THE 1985 SERVICE MANUAL. 1985 ENGINES CODED K USE THE 1984 DESIGN ONE PIECE THIN SEAL THAT IS SERVICED BY R & R OF THE ENGINE AND CRANKSHAFT ASSEMBLY. WHEN ORDERING BLOCK RELATED PARTS FOR THESE ENGINES, REFER TO THE ENGINE DATE CODE STAMPED ON THE HORIZONTAL MACHINED SURFACE ON THE FRONT OF THE BLOCK BETWEEN THE CYLINDER HEADS.(SEE PARTS LIST)

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
