General Motors has determined that some 1987 GMC S/T model trucks may experience fracture of the power steering pump support brace. This condition can in turn lead to possible fracture of the power steering pump mounting bracket and/or loss of the serpentine accessory drive belt. Loss of the serpentine drive belt would result in loss of air conditioning, generator, power steering assist and water pump operation.
To correct this condition, the power steering pump support brace will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced with a new design brace. The power steering pump mounting bracket will also be inspected and replaced as required on all involved vehicles.
Involved are certain 1987 GMC S/T model trucks equipped with 2.8L V6 engine (RPO LL2, VIN Code R) and power steering (RPO N40) and produced within the following VIN break-points:

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
