LUBRICANT SEEPAGE FROM MANUAL STEERING GEAR
Some 1986-87 Model S 10/15 trucks with manual steering may experience lubricant seepage from the adjuster plug. To repair this condition the following procedure should be performed.
1. Mark position of the adjuster plug on gear housing to insure proper positioning after repair.
2. Remove adjuster plug locknut from the gear.
3. Back off adjuster two complete turns until mark on adjuster plug and housing line up.
4. Clean adjuster plug threads closest to the housing, housing edge and adjuster plug locknut with locktite safety solvent 75559 or equivalent (Figure 1).
5. Apply a continuous bead of GM sealant 992545 or equivalent on the threads the entire diameter of the adjuster plug (Figure 2).
6. Tighten the adjuster plug two complete turns until the mark on the adjuster plug and the housing line up.
7. Now apply a continuous bead of sealant where the housing and adjuster plug meet (Figure 2).
8. Install the adjuster plug locknut and tighten to (95 lb ft) 130 Nm, being sure adjuster plug does not move while tightening locknut.
9. Check lube level and add as required.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
