WIND NOISE OR AIR LEAK INVOLVING SWING-OUT SIDE GLASS

SUBJECT: WIND NOISE OR AIR LEAK INVOLVING SWING-OUT SIDE GLASS (REPOSITION LATCH MECHANISM)

MODELS: EARLY PRODUCTION 1994 "S" SERIES EXTENDED CAB PICKUP

CONDITION:

SOME OWNERS MAY COMMENT OF A WIND NOISE OR AIR LEAK CONDITION INVOLVING THE SWING-OUT SIDE GLASS ON THEIR EXTENDED CAB PICKUP TRUCK WHEN THE GLASS IS IN THE CLOSED POSITION. ANOTHER COMMENT THAT MAY BE HEARD IS THAT THE GLASS DOES NOT APPEAR TO BE FULLY SEATED, THAT IT PROTRUDES OUT BEYOND THE BODY SHEET METAL.

CAUSE:

THE FOUR LOCATING HOLES FOR THE LATCH MECHANISM ON THE BODY C PILLAR ARE IMPROPERLY LOCATED. THIS CREATES AN INCORRECT GEOMETRY CONDITION WITH THE LATCH ASSEMBLY PREVENTING IT FROM PULLING THE GLASS INWARD WITH SUFFICIENT FORCE AGAINST THE BODY WEATHERSTRIP.

CORRECTION:

IT WILL BE NECESSARY TO RE-ORIENT THE LOCATING HOLES TO THE CORRECT POSITION ON THE BODY C PILLAR.

SERVICE PROCEDURE:

1. USING A PUNCH, CAREFULLY REMOVE THE ROLL PIN WHICH ATTACHES THE LATCH ASSEMBLY TO THE SWING-OUT GLASS. 2. REMOVE COAT HANGER. 3. REMOVE SEAT BELT ANCHOR BOLTS (TOP AND FLOOR). DO NOT REMOVE SEAT BELT RETRACTOR ASSEMBLY FROM PILLAR. 4. REMOVE BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL RETAINING SCREWS. 5. REMOVE SILL PLATE. 6. DISMOUNT TRIM PANEL FROM PILLAR (DO NOT REMOVE COMPLETELY). 7. DISCONNECT WIRING HARNESS FROM RADIO SPEAKER. 8 INSPECT THE LOCATION WHERE THE LATCH ASSEMBLY IS RETAINED TO THE BODY C PILLAR. THE NEED FOR RE-POSITIONING OF THE LATCH- TO-BODY MOUNTING HOLES WILL BE APPLICABLE ONLY IF THE EDGE OF THE LATCH BASE IS NOT FLUSH WITH THE INBOARD EDGE OF THE C PILLAR (REFER TO THE ATTACHED ILLUSTRATION "A"). 9. IF THE LOCATION IS NOT FLUSH, REMOVE THE FOUR RIVETS RETAINING THE LATCH TO THE PILLAR BY REMOVING THE RIVET HEADS WITH A DRILL BIT AND REMOVE THE LATCH. CLEAN THE AREA OF ANY DEBRIS. 10. USING THE ORIGINAL LATCH ASSEMBLY AS A TEMPLATE, PLACE IT ON THE C PILLAR SO THAT THE EDGE OF ITS BASE IS NOW FLUSH WITH THE INBOARD EDGE OF THE PILLAR. MARK THE PILLAR WHERE THE NEW HOLES ARE TO BE LOCATED. USE A CENTER PUNCH ON THE MARKS AS AN AID IN PERFORMING STEP #10. 11. USING A DRILL WITH A 5 MM (3/16") BIT, CAREFULLY DRILL THE FOUR NEW HOLES. NOTE: IT IS NOT ABNORMAL TO HAVE THE NEW HOLE(S) OVERLAP WITH THE ORIGINAL HOLE(S). 12. REPOSITION THE LATCH ASSEMBLY TO THE PILLAR USING THE NEW MOUNTING HOLES AND FASTEN INTO PLACE USING FOUR MACHINE SCREWS (8-32 X 1/2") AND NUTS. USE A THREAD LOCKING COMPOUND SUCH AS GM PART NUMBER 12345382 ON THE SCREWS TO ENSURE PROPER RETENTION. 13. REMOVE ANY LOOSE MATERIAL THAT MAY HAVE FALLEN INTO THE LOWER BODY CAB EXTENSION PANEL AREA TO PREVENT RATTLES. 14. RECONNECT WIRING HARNESS TO THE RADIO SPEAKER. 15. REPOSITION THE TRIM PANEL TO THE PILLAR. 16. INSTALL SILL PLATE. 17. INSTALL THE BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL RETAINING SCREWS. 18. INSTALL SEAT BELT ANCHOR BOLTS (TOP AND FLOOR). 19. INSTALL COAT HANGER. 20. REATTACH THE LATCH ASSEMBLY TO THE SWING-OUT GLASS BY USING A PUNCH TO CAREFULLY DRIVE THE ROLL PIN BACK INTO POSITION. 21. CHECK FOR PROPER OPERATION OF THE LATCH ASSEMBLY AND ROAD TEST TO VERIFY THE REPAIR.
