TRANSFER CASE SHAFT LINKAGE SHEARED LINKAGE GROMMETS

MODELS: 1983 T AND K3 TRUCKS

The shift linkage isolation grommet used with type 205 and 207 transfer cases may have been sheared on some vehicles. The grommet is usually sheared by a sharp corner on the shift lever and may result in the shift linkage becoming disengaged.

One grommet is required on the K3 linkage at the transfer case and two grommets are required on the T linkage, one at the transfer case and one at the shifter.

Before a new grommet is installed, the bore in the lever should be inspected for burrs. The bore should be corrected with a file or stone. The grommet should be lubricated before installation.

The grommet should be pressed into place and definitely not hammered. Hammering the grommet into place will frequently shear the grommet.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
