The procedure outlined in the 1983 and 1984 Service Manuals Page 18 - 2.8L V-6 on the subject item requires the following clarification.
1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
2. Remove dipstick.
3. Raise vehicle.
4. Remove drive belt splash shield.
5. Remove front axle shield.
6. Remove transfer case shield.
7. Disconnect brake line from No. 2 crossmember and side of left frame rail.
8. Remove No. 2 crossmember.
9. Disconnect catalytic converter hanger bolts and loosen exhaust pipe to converter clamp.
10. Disconnect exhaust pipes at manifolds and slide exhaust system rearward.
11. Disconnect front propshaft at drive pinion.
12. Disconnect engine strut rods at flywheel cover and loosen at block.
13. Remove flywheel cover.
14. Remove starter motor.
15. Disconnect steering shock absorber at frame bracket.
16. Remove steering gear bolts.
17. Mark position of idler arm location for reinstallation, then remove attaching bolts.
18. Pull steering gear and linkage forward.
19. Remove left side differential mounting bolts at left frame rail.
20. Remove right differential mounting bolts at welded support bracket.
21. Move differential assembly forward.
22. Remove motor mount through bolts.
23. Drain oil from oil pan.
24. Remove oil pan bolts.
25. Raise front of engine.
26. Remove oil pan.
For installation follow procedure as described in Service Manual.
