The PG-260 starter motor achieves gear reduction at the rate of 5:1 through planetary gears. It's relatively small size and light weight offer improved cranking performance and reduced current requirements.

When the solenoid windings are energized, the resulting plunger and shift lever movement causes the pinion to mesh with the engine flywheel ring gear, the solenoid main contacts to close, and engine cranking takes place. When the engine starts, the pinion overrunning clutch protects the armature from excessive speed until the key is released, at which time the plunger return spring causes the pinion to disengage. To prevent excessive overrunning, the key should be released immediately when the engine starts.

Notice
Never operate the starter motor more than 15 seconds at a time without pausing to allow it to cool for at least 2 minutes. Overheating, caused by excessive cranking, will damage the motor.

The PG-260 starter motor is not repairable. No periodic maintenance is required.
