Steering Knuckle Replacement RWD

Tools Required

    • J 24319-B Steering Linkage and Tie Rod Puller
    • J 23742 Ball Joint Separator

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 160827  Size: SH
  1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Caution: Floor jack must remain under the lower control arm during removal and installation to retain the lower control arm in position. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

  3. Support the lower control arm with a safety stand.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  5. Remove the wheel hub and bearing assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement .

  7. Remove the outer tie rod to steering knuckle retaining nut.

  8. Object Number: 643351  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using J 24319-B .

  10. Object Number: 1842  Size: SH
  11. Remove the steering knuckle gasket only if the steering knuckle is being repaired or replaced.

  12. Object Number: 164993  Size: SH
  13. Remove the upper and lower control arms cotter pins and the retaining nuts.

  14. Object Number: 130902  Size: SH
  15. Remove the upper ball joint stud from the steering knuckle using J 23742 .
  16. Raise the upper control arm. Disengage the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle.

  17. Object Number: 130899  Size: SH
  18. Disconnect the steering knuckle from the lower ball joint using J 23742 .
  19. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle.
  20. Clean the steering knuckle with solvent, then air dry.
  21. Inspect the steering knuckle tapered holes that attach to the ball joints and the outer tie rod. Replace the steering knuckle if any of the 3 holes are out-of-round, deformed, or damaged.
  22. Inspect the spindle for wear or damage.

Installation Procedure

  1. Connect the steering knuckle to the lower ball joint. Press the steering knuckle onto the lower ball joint until the lower ball joint is fully seated.
  2. Connect the steering knuckle to the upper ball joint. Lower the upper control arm in order to seat the upper ball joint into the steering knuckle.
  3. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the upper and lower ball joint retaining nuts.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the upper ball joint retaining nut to 83 N·m (61 lb ft).
        • Tighten the lower ball joint retaining nut to 125 N·m (90 lb ft).
  6. Install new cotter pins. Tighten the upper and lower ball joint nuts up to an additional 1/6 amount to insert the cotter pin through the nuts. Bend the cotter pin flat against the nut.
  7. Install the steering knuckle gasket, if necessary.

  8. Object Number: 689102  Size: SH
  9. Connect the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle.
  10. Install the outer tie rod retaining nut.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the outer tie rod retaining nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  12. Install the rotor/hub assembly. Refer to Front Wheel Hub, Bearing, and Seal Replacement .
  13. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Remove the safety stand from the lower control arm.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Check the front wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
