Problem

Action

Under-inflated tires

Inflate the tires to the specified pressure. Refer to Tire Inflation Pressure Specifications in Maintenance and Lubrication.

The lower coupling flange is rubbing against the steering gear adjuster plug.

  1. Loosen the pinch bolt.
  2. Assemble the components correctly.

The steering wheel is rubbing against the directional signal housing.

Adjust the upper and lower shrouds. Refer to:

    •  Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard
    •  Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard
    •  Steering Column Trim Covers - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt
    •  Steering Column Trim Covers - Assemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt

Tight or frozen steering shaft bearings

Replace the bearings. Refer to:

    •  Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard
    •  Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard
    •  Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Disassemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt
    •  Steering Shaft, Lower Bearing, and Jacket - Assemble - Off Vehicle in Steering Wheel and Column - Tilt

Binding in the steering linkage or the ball joints

    • Inspect the steering linkage and replace all worn parts, as necessary. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage.
    • Inspect the ball joint and replace, if necessary. Refer to Ball Joint Wear Check in Front Suspension.

Misalignment of the steering gear to the column

Align the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column - Standard or Steering Column Replacement in Steering Wheel and Column -Tilt.

The tie rod pivots are not centralized.

Adjust the tie rod ends as necessary to center the pivots. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage.

A lack of lubrication in the suspension joints and the steering linkage

Lubricate the suspension joints and the steering linkage. Refer to Explanation of Scheduled Services in Maintenance and Lubrication.

A stuck or plugged steering gear valve spool

Remove and clean or replace the valve. Refer to Steering Gear Valve Replacement - Off Vehicle .

Improper front wheel alignment

Inspect the alignment of the front wheels and correct, if necessary. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.

The steering gear is adjusted too tightly.

  1. Check the worm thrust bearing preload and adjust if necessary. Refer to Steering Gear Worm Gear Thrust Bearing Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .
  2. Check the pitman shaft over-center preload and adjust if necessary. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .

There is a kink in the return hose.

Replace the return hose. Refer to Power Brake Booster Outlet Hose Replacement .

The steering intermediate shaft stone shield is side-loaded against the shaft assembly.

Reposition the intermediate shaft stone shield as necessary.
