FAILED ECM'S (NOT PROTECTED WHEN PAINTING VEHICLE)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1987 'P' MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 5.7L TBI ENGINE (RPO L05)

The 1987 'P' model will be available with a TBI (Throttle Body Injection) engine (RPO L05). It is important that the ECM (Electronic Control Module) be protected from extreme heat 85 DEG C (185 DEG F) during painting operations.

The following information will be published to inform body builders of the temperature sensitivity of the ECM. This information will be placed in the general instructions to body builders (which is in the front of the 'Body Builders Book') and on the face of the chassis drawings contained in the 'Body Builders Book'.

As published in the 'Body Builders Book' general instructions:

When a 'P' model is equipped with the L05 engine, it has an ECM (Electronic Control Module) mounted on the dash and toe panel. The ECM must be maintained at a temperature below 85 DEG C (185 DEG F) at all times. This is most essential if the vehicle is run through a paint oven. The ECM will become inoperative if its temperature exceeds 85 DEG C (185 DEG F). Therefore, it is recommended that temporary insulation be placed around the ECM during the time that the vehicle is in the paint oven.

As published on the face of the chassis drawing in 'Body Builders Book':

ECM (LO5 Only) must be protected from temperatures above 85 DEG C (185 DEG F).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
