CAMPAIGN: INCORRECT TRANS DIPSTICK TUBE LENGTH

SUBJECT: INCORRECT LENGTH DIPSTICK TUBE

MODELS: 1992 CHEVROLET ASTRO/GMC SAFARI VANS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION (Rear Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive)

General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that certain 1992 Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari Vans (Rear Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive) were built with the transmission dipstick tube assembly shorter than engineering print specifications. This condition could cause a properly filled transmission to indicate an overfilled reading on the dipstick. If the transmission were to be filled to the operating range indicated on the dipstick, transmission slippage (primarily when the transmission fluid is cold) and shortened transmission life may occur. All of the transmissions were properly filled in production except for a one month period when they were filled to the operating range on the dipstick.

To correct these conditions, a new dipstick which matches the existing tube length will be sent to all owners of record. Additionally, those owners with underfilled transmissions will be asked to return to their dealership to have the transmission fluid level inspected and adjusted as necessary.

COPY OF CUSTOMER LETTER

General Motors of Canada Limited August 1992

Dear General Motors Customer,

General Motors of Canada Limited has determined that certain 1992 Chevrolet Astro/GMC Safari Vans (Rear Wheel Drive and All-Wheel Drive) were built with the transmission dipstick tube assembly shorter than engineering print specifications. This condition could cause a properly filled transmission to indicate an overfilled reading on the dipstick.

To correct the above condition, a new dipstick which matches the existing tube length has been mailed to you with this letter along with installation instructions. If you desire, your General Motors dealer will install the dipstick for you at no charge.

All of the transmissions were properly filled in production except for a one month period when they were filled to the operating range on the dipstick. This one month production of vehicles may require addition of fluid after installation of the new dipstick. If your vehicle is a Chevrolet and the last six (6) characters of your Vehicle Identification Number fall between 151055 and 165702 or if your vehicle is a GMC and the last six (6) characters of the Vehicle Identification Number fall between 516778 and 521562, please make an appointment with your General Motors dealer to have your transmission fluid level checked and, if necessary, bring it up to the proper level. This service will be provided for you at no charge.

If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please forward the dipstick to the new owner. If this is not convenient to you, please deliver the dipstick to your nearest GM dealer. DO NOT RETURN TO GENERAL MOTORS.

We appreciate your cooperation and are sorry to cause you this inconvenience; however, we have taken this action in the interest of your continued satisfaction with our products.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
