SUBJECT: REAR WIPER INOPERABLE (INSTALL NEW WIPER ARM ASSEMBLY)

VEHICLES AFFECTED: 1992 M,L VANS WITH DUTCH DOORS (RPO E54) CHEVROLET ASTRO, GMC SAFARI

Some owners of 1992 M/L Vans equipped with Dutch Doors (RPO E54) may experience a condition where the rear wiper blade, or the wiper arm may become inoperable. The wiper arm and wiper motor shaft may become bent causing the rear liftgate glass to become scratched.

The old wiper arm assembly design is such that when going through a mechanical rotating brush car wash, it may be possible for the rotating brushes to grab the arm and bend both the arm and the motor shaft.

A new wiper arm assembly has been released into production. This new assembly is similar to the old assembly, except for a revised wiper arm angle and a wiper blade that attaches from the bottom. This new assembly makes it less likely that a mechanical car wash could grab the arm.

SERVICE PROCEDURE: (Reference Figure 1 and 2) ------------------ 1. Remove the interior liftgate moulding.

2. Remove the interior handle and the interior handle cover.

3. Remove the rear wiper assembly.

4. Disconnect the wiper hose from the lift gate harness assembly and pull the rubber grommet away from the lift gate.

5. Install the new wiper assembly to the vehicle.

6. Install the wiper hose grommet through the liftgate and secure to the liftgate harness assembly.

7. Test wiper for glass cleaning radius and wiper fluid dispense.

8. Install the interior liftgate moulding.

9. Install the interior handle and the interior handle cover.
