GM Service Manual Online

Caution: Do not use the cruise control on slippery roads, steeply graded roads, or in heavy traffic of heavy or varying volume. Failure to follow these CAUTIONS could possibly cause you to loose control of the vehicle and result in damage to the vehicle and personal injury.

This vehicle is equipped with the Electro-Motor Cruise System. This system is designed to automatically maintain a desired vehicle speed under normal driving conditions. The system has 6 modes:

Object Number: 276101 Size: SH
    • CRUISE
    • COAST
    • RESUME SPEED
    • ACCELERATE
    • TAP UP
    • TAP DOWN

The cruise control system consists of the following components:

    • The multifunction lever
    • The cruise control module
    • The vehicle speed sensor (VSS)
    • The vehicle control module (VCM)
    • The brake release switch
    • The electrical harness

The cruise control module contains an electronic controller and an electronic stepper motor. The controller monitors the vehicle speed and operates the stepper motor. The controller responds to signals from the multifunction switch, located on the turn signal lever. The stepper motor maintains the desired vehicle speed by means of a band and throttle linkage that moves in response to the controller.

The cruise control module contains a low speed limit that prevents the system from engaging at lower than about 40 km/h (25 mph).

When you depress the brake pedal, a release switch, mounted to the brake pedal bracket, disengages the system. The throttle then returns to the idle position.
