A Constant Velocity (CV) universal joint propeller shaft transmits power from the transfer case to the front differential.
The constant velocity joint allows the driveline angle to adjust according to the up and down movement of the vehicle without disturbing the power flow. The joint consists of an outer bearing retainer and flange, spring, cap, circlip, inner bearing assembly, and wire ring. The inner bearing assembly includes a bearing cage, six ball bearings, and an inner race.
If a universal joint is worn or noisy, install a service kit on the vehicle. A service kit consists of a spider with bearing assemblies and snap rings. If you need to repair a universal joint, remove the entire propeller shaft from the vehicle. Avoid jamming, bending or over-angulating any parts of the propeller shaft assembly. If a vehicle needs undercoating, keep the propeller shaft completely free of undercoating material. Undercoating material or any other foreign material upsets the propeller shaft balance, and produces serious vibration.
