Problem

Action

The gear is loose on the frame.

  1. Inspect the steering gear mounting bolts.
  2. Tighten the bolts to the proper specification. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications .

The steering linkage is loose.

Inspect the linkage pivot points for wear. Refer to Steering Linkage Inspection in Steering Linkage.

The pressure hose is touching other parts of the vehicle.

Adjust the hose position. Do not bend the tubing by hand. Refer to Power Brake Booster Outlet Hose Replacement .

The pitman arm is loose.

Tighten the pitman arm nut or the pinch bolt to the proper specification. Refer to Fastener Tightening Specifications in Steering Linkage.

The over-center adjustment is improper.

(A slight rattle may occur on turns because of an increased clearance off the high point. This is normal. Do not reduce the clearance below the specified limit in order to eliminate this slight rattle.)

Adjust to specification. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft Over-Center Preload Adjustment - Off Vehicle .
