Removal Procedure

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

       • Air bag deployment
       • Personal injury
       • Unnecessary SIR system repairs
In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:
       • Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.
       • If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

  1. Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position to unlock the steering wheel.

  3. Object Number: 309830 Size: SH
  4. Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees so that the side of the SIR module is at the 12 o'clock position in order to gain access to the holes behind the steering wheel.

  5. Object Number: 245788 Size: SH
  6. Insert a flat-bladed tool into the access hole and push the leaf spring in order to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.

  7. Object Number: 288763 Size: SH
  8. Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees in order to gain access to the remaining access hole.
  9. Insert a screwdriver into the remaining hole and push the leaf spring in order to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.

  10. Object Number: 334741 Size: SH
  11. Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SIR wiring.

  12. Object Number: 334744 Size: SH
  13. Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
  14. Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.

  15. Object Number: 245795 Size: SH
  16. Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
  17. Disconnect the electrical connector.
  18. Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

       • Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module
       • Make sure the bag opening points away from you
When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

  19. Remove the inflator module from the vehicle.
  20. Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required retention period. Refer to Inflator Module Handling and Scrapping .
