Removal Procedure

Important: The front engine cover gasket is reusable.

  1. Remove the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
  2. Remove the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  4. Drop the front of the oil pan down to remove the engine front cover.

  5. Remove the crankshaft position sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.

  6. Object Number: 64547  Size: SH
  7. Remove the engine front cover bolts.
  8. Remove the engine front cover and the gasket.
  9. Remove the engine front cover seal from the engine front cover.
  10. • Pry the engine front cover seal out with a screwdriver.
    • Take care not to distort the engine front cover.
  11. Inspect the engine front cover and engine front cover gasket for distortion and damage. Replace if necessary.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 22102 Oil Seal Installer

  1. Coat the crankshaft front seal lips with clean engine oil.

  2. Object Number: 64935  Size: SH
  3. Use the J 22102 in order to install the crankshaft front seal. The open end of the crankshaft front seal faces inside the engine.
  4. Important: Apply RTV sealer GM P/N 12345739 to both front corners of the oil pan.

  5. Install the engine front cover and gasket to the engine block.
  6. Install the engine front cover bolts to the engine.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .
  9. Install the crankshaft position sensor. Refer to Crankshaft Position Sensor Replacement in Engine Controls.
  10. Install the water pump. Refer to Refer to Water Pump Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  11. Install the crankshaft balancer. Refer to Crankshaft Balancer Replacement .
