Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 3049-A Valve Lifter Remover

  1. Remove the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement
  2. Remove the push rods.
  3. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Removal
  4. Important: The valve lifters and guides must be installed in the same location from which they were removed.

  5. Remove the valve lifter retainer and the guides.

  6. Object Number: 11509  Size: SH
  7. Remove the valve lifters one at a time.
  8. Place the lifters and guides in an organizer rack.

  9. Object Number: 31350  Size: SH
  10. A stuck valve lifter can be removed using the J 3049-A
  11. Inspect the valve lifter. Refer to Valve Lifters and Guides Clean and Inspect

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 11509  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • When new valve lifters or a new camshaft is installed, change the engine oil and the oil filter.
            Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
       • Add Engine Oil Supplement GM P/N 1051396 or the equivalent to the engine oil.
       • Replace all the valve lifters when a new camshaft is installed.

  1. Install the valve lifters one at a time.
  2. Important: If installing used lifters, make sure they are in their original locations.

  3. Install the guides and the valve lifter retainer. Refer to Valve Lifter Installation
  4. Install the push rods. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Installation
  5. Install the intake manifold. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement
