Removal Procedure

Caution: Before servicing any electrical component, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position and all electrical loads must be OFF, unless instructed otherwise in these procedures. If a tool or equipment could easily come in contact with a live exposed electrical terminal, also disconnect the negative battery cable. Failure to follow these precautions may cause personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Remove the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  2. Remove the oil level indicator and the tube from the engine block. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  3. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Drain the crankcase. Refer to Draining Fluids and Oil Filter Removal .
  5. Remove the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold pipe. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.

  6. Object Number: 32688 Size: SH
  7. Remove the flywheel inspection cover from the transmission.

  8. Object Number: 64546 Size: SH
  9. Remove the oil pan bolts from the engine block.
  10. Remove the oil pan and the gasket from the engine block.
  11. Clean the gasket sealing surfaces on the engine block. Refer to Engine Block Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Apply the RTV sealer GM P/N 12345739 or equivalent to the front cover to block joint and to the crankshaft rear seal to block joint. Apply the sealant for about 25 mm (1 in) in both directions from each of the four corners.

  2. Object Number: 64546 Size: SH

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the oil pan bolts.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the oil pan bolts to 25N·m  (18 lb ft).

  5. Install the oil filter adapter to the engine block. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
  6. Install the transmission oil cooler line retainer to the bracket.

  7. Object Number: 32688 Size: SH
  8. Install the flywheel inspection shield from the transmission.
  9. Install the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifold. Refer to Catalytic Converter Replacement in Engine Exhaust.
  10. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  11. Install the oil level indicator and the tube to the engine block. Refer to Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement .
  12. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Cable Replacement .
  13. Refill the crankcase with the proper quantity and grade of engine oil. Refer to Approximate Fluid Capacities .
