Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 42640 Steering
Column Anti-Rotation Pin
- Install the J-42640 anti-rotation
pin in the steering column lower access hole.
- Mark the Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear alignment before
removal.
- Position the intermediate shaft cover (1) for access to
the lower shaft pinch bolt. Turn the steering wheel to allow access to the
pinch bolt.
- Remove the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) from the steering
gear stub shaft.
- Remove the steering column from the vehicle. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
.
- Remove the intermediate shaft retaining bolt from the steering
column.
- Remove the intermediate shaft (1) from the steering column.
Installation Procedure
- Install the intermediate shaft to the steering column.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt to the steering
column.
Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft bolt to the steering column to 47 N·m
(35 lb ft).
- Make sure the cover to the steering column is inside the intermediate
shaft cover.
- Install the steering column to the vehicle. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
.
- Make sure to align the marks made at removal.
Install the intermediate shaft to the steering gear stub shaft.
- Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering
gear stub shaft.
Tighten
Tighten the intermediate shaft retaining bolt to the steering gear stub
shaft to 61 N·m (45 lb ft).
- Remove the J-42640 anti-rotation
pin from the steering column lower access hole.
