The supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system supplements the protection of the seat belt by deploying an air bag from the center of the steering wheel module during certain frontal crashes.

The air bag deploys when the vehicle is involved in a frontal crash of sufficient force, within 30 degrees of the centerline. The steering wheel column is collapsible. Inspect the steering wheel column after an accident along with the instrument panel magnesium carrier, whether or not the air bag deploys.
