Removal Procedure

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cables.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the left front tire.
  4. Remove the splash shield from the left front wheel well.
  5. Remove the lead wires from the glow plugs (1) in cylinders 1 and 3.

  6. Remove the glow plugs (1) from cylinders 1 and 3. If the glow plug was damaged during removal, refer to link 565944 Damaged Glow Plug Removal.
  7. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  8. From the inside of the vehicle, remove the lead wires from the glow plugs (1) in cylinders 5 and 7.

  9. Remove the glow plugs(1) from cylinders 5 and 7. If the glow plug was damaged during the removal procedure, refer to link 565944 Damaged Glow Plug Removal.

Installation Procedure
  1. Coat the glow plug threads with an anti-seize compound, GM P/N 14001899, or an equivalent.

    2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  2. Install the glow plugs (1) into cylinders 1 and 3 by reaching through the left front wheel well.

    3. Tighten
    Tighten the glow plugs to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  3. Install the lead wires for cylinder 1 and 3.
  4. Install the splash shield in the left front wheel well.
  5. Inspect the wire routing, ensuring that the lead wires are not rubbing against the exhaust manifold or any part that may harm the wire insulation.
  6. Install the left front tire.

  7. Install the glow plugs (1) into cylinders 5 and 7 from inside of the vehicle.

    8. Tighten
    Tighten the glow plugs to 17 N·m (13 lb ft).

  8. Connect the lead wires to the glow plugs.
  9. Connect the negative battery cables.

    10. Important: Ensure that the PCM electrical harness is properly routed to avoid contact with the Engine Cover during installation.

  10. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Front Cover Replacement Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
