Removal Procedure

Caution: Floor jack must remain under the lower control arm during removal and installation to retain the lower control arm in position. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

  1. Raise the front of the vehicle.
  2. • Support the lower control arm with floor stands.
    • Because the weight of the vehicle is used to relieve the spring tension, position the floor stands between the spring seats and the ball joints of the lower control arms in order to maintain maximum leverage.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  5. Remove the brake hose bracket and wheel speed sensor harness/bracket from the upper control arm.
  6. 3.1. Remove the nuts and the bolt.
    3.2. Tie the hose out of the way.
  7. Remove the upper ball joint from the steering knuckle. Refer to Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .

  9. Remove the attaching bolts and nuts of the upper control arm.
  10. Remove the upper control arm from the vehicle.
  11. Remove the frame knockouts if equipped. Refer to Frame Bracket Knock Out Removal in Wheel Alignment.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the upper control arm to the frame.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

    Important: 

       • The pivot bolts must be installed in the proper direction.
       • Tighten the front nut prior to tightening the rear nut.

  3. Install the new upper control arm bolts and nuts.
  4. Tighten

        • Tighten the nuts with the control arm at Z height. Refer to Trim Height Inspection in Suspension General Diagnosis.
        • Tighten the nuts to 190 N·m (140 lb ft).
  5. Install the upper ball joint to the steering knuckle. Refer to Upper Control Arm Ball Joint Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 179436  Size: SH
  7. Install the brake hose bracket to the upper control arm.
  8. Install the wheel speed sensor harness/bracket to the upper control arm with the nut and bolt.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 24 N·m (18 lb in).

  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  11. Remove the safety stands.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Check and align the front wheels. Refer to Wheel Alignment Specifications in Wheel Alignment.
