Removal Procedure

J 42640 Steering Column Anti-Rotation Pin


    Object Number: 333146  Size: SH
  1. Install the J 42640 anti-rotation pin in the steering column lower access hole.

  2. Object Number: 284408  Size: SH
  3. Remove the protective cover from the steering column under the Instrument Panel to gain access to the bolt.
  4. Remove the bolt (3) retaining the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).

  5. Object Number: 309837  Size: SH
  6. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
  7. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  8. Mark the Intermediate Shaft to Steering Gear alignment before removal.
  9. Position the intermediate shaft cover (1) for access to the lower shaft pinch bolt. Turn the steering wheel to allow access to the pinch bolt.

  11. Remove the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) from the steering gear stub shaft.
  12. Remove the intermediate shaft from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Make sure to align the marks made at removal.
  2. Install the intermediate shaft (1) to the steering gear stub shaft.

  3. Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering gear stub shaft.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft retaining bolt to the steering gear stub shaft to 61 N·m (45 lb ft).

  5. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement or Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.

  6. Object Number: 284408  Size: SH
  7. Install the intermediate shaft (2) to the steering column (1).
  8. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   9. Install the intermediate shaft retaining bolt (3) to the steering column (1).
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft bolt to the steering column to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

    Make sure the cover to the steering column is inside the intermediate shaft cover.

  11. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle.
