  1. Operate the engine.
  2. Compare the actual engine coolant temperature and the temperature indicated by the instrument cluster's temperature gauge.

Are the engine coolant temperature and the indicated coolant temperature within the specified value of each other?

17°C (30°F)

The temperature gauge functions properly.

Inspect the engine cooling system for operating conditions, as needed.

Does the temperature gauge still always indicate HOT?

  1. Disconnect the connector at the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.
  2. Place the ignition switch in the RUN position.

Does the temperature gauge indicate COLD?

Go to Step 5

Replace the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.

Does the temperature gauge still always indicate HOT?

--

  1. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Connect a J 39200 between the instrument cluster connector, cavity B9 for CKT 35 (DK GRN), and ground.

Is continuity present?

Repair the short to ground in CKT 35 (DK GRN) between the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor and the instrument cluster.

Does the temperature gauge operate properly?

  2. Inspect the actual engine coolant temperature.
  3. Observe the instrument cluster temperature gauge temperature.

Are the actual engine coolant temperature and the indicated engine coolant temperature within 17°C (30°F) of each other?

  1. Disconnect the connector at the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.
  2. Turn the ignition switch to the RUN position

Does the temperature gauge indicate COLD?

Replace the engine coolant temperature gauge sensor.

  1. Disconnect the connector at the instrument cluster.
  2. Connect a J 39200 between the following components:
  3. • The instrument cluster connector cavity B9 for the CKT 35 (DK GRN) wire
    • Ground

  1. Locate the short to ground on the CKT 35 (DK GRN) wire between the following components:
  2. • The engine coolant temperature gauge sensor
    • The instrument cluster
  3. Repair the short to ground on the CKT 35 (DK GRN) wire between the following components:
  4. • The engine coolant temperature gauge sensor
    • The instrument cluster

Is the repair complete?
