The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:
Condition 1:
When a ring and pinion gear set is ordered for any light duty truck with the AAM 8.6" rear axle, the carrier starter shims included in the kit may be too small in diameter.
Condition 2:
A technician may have a concern of being unable to correctly fit the side gear to the differential case.
Recommendation/Instructions:
Correction for Condition 1:
Whenever a ring and pinion gear set is ordered for the AAM 8.6" rear axle order a quantity of 2 for part number 12471330 to obtain the larger diameter starter shim.
Correction for Condition 2:
- Differential case # 26060748 is used with side gear kit part #12471314.
- Differential case # 12471540 is used with side gear kit part # 88966997.
Note: The side gear kits part numbers as shown above must be used with the respective differential case. The side gear kits are not interchangeable.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
