Removal Procedure

Important: Valve rocker arm cover gaskets are reusable. Replace the valve rocker arm cover gasket only if damaged.

  1. Open the hood.
  2. Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in engine electrical.
  3. Remove the engine cover from the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  4. Remove the air cleaner intake duct from the throttle body. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  5. Remove the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  6. Remove the PCV valve.
  7. Remove the EGR inlet tube. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Pipe Replacement in Engine Controls.
  8. Remove the vent tube at the valve rocker arm cover.
  9. Remove the throttle body assembly. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  10. Remove the throttle body studs from the upper intake manifold.

  12. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  13. Remove the valve rocker arm cover from the cylinder head.
  14. Remove the valve rocker arm cover gasket from the cylinder head.
  15. Inspect the valve rocker arm cover, valve rocker arm cover gasket, and sealing surfaces for distortion and damage. Replace if necessary. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 8 N·m (72 lb in).

  5. Install the throttle body studs to the upper intake manifold.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the studs to 12 N·m (108 lb in).

  7. Install the throttle body assembly. Refer to Throttle Body Assembly Replacement .
  8. Install the vent tube to the valve rocker arm cover.
  9. Install the EGR pipe from the exhaust manifold to the lower intake manifold. Refer to Exhaust Gas Recirculation Pipe Replacement in Engine Controls.
  10. Install the PCV valve and the tube.
  11. Connect the spark plug wires. Refer to Spark Plug Wire Harness Replacement .
  12. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls.
  13. Install the engine cover to the vehicle. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  14. Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
