Tools Required
J 23523-F Crankshaft
Balancer Puller and Installer
Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer
to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
in Engine Electrical.
- Remove the upper fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the drive belt from the vehicle. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the lower fan shroud from the radiator. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the fan clutch
from the water pump. Refer to
Fan Clutch Replacement
.
- Remove the drive belt
pulley from the balancer.
- Use the J 23523-F
to remove the crankshaft balancer.
- Remove the crankshaft balancer (external).
- Remove the crankshaft key, if necessary.
Installation Procedure
Important: The inertial weight section of the crankshaft balancer is assembled
to the hub with a rubber-type material. The correct installation procedures
(with the proper tool) must be followed or movement of the inertial weight
section of the hub will destroy the balancer and will have to be replaced.
- Install the crankshaft balancer key, if removed.
- Apply a small amount of clean engine oil on the sealing surface
of the new crankshaft balancer.
- Install the J 23523-F
stud to the crankshaft. Thread the
stud fully into the tapped hole in the crankshaft.
- Install the crankshaft balancer (external) over the end of the
crankshaft.
- Align the keyway in the crankshaft balancer with the crankshaft
key.
- Use a small amount of RTV sealer GM P/N 12345739
or equivalent to seal the crankshaft key to the crankshaft.
- Install the bearing, washer, and nut.
- Turn the nut to pull the crankshaft balancer into place and remove J 23523-F
.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the crankshaft
balancer bolt and washer.
Tighten
Tighten the crankshaft balancer bolt to 149 N·m (110 lb ft).
- Install the drive belt
pulley on the crankshaft.
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 40 N·m (30 lb ft).
- Install the fan clutch
to the water pump. Refer to
Fan Clutch Replacement
Engine Cooling Fan Replacement in Engine Cooling.
- Install the lower fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Install the drive belt in the vehicle. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Install the upper fan shroud to the radiator. Refer to
Fan Shroud Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Connect the battery negative cable to the battery. Refer to
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection
in Engine Electrical.
