Speedometer and/or Odometer Inoperative Gas

Operate the vehicle over a known distance of at least 8 kilometers (5 miles).

In order to inspect for conditions with the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) and the vehicle control module (VCM), perform the following diagnostic tests:

    •  Diagnostic Starting Point in Antilock Brake System
    •  Diagnostic Starting Point in Engine Controls - 4.3L
    •  Diagnostic Starting Point in Engine Controls - 5.0,5.7L
    •  Diagnostic Starting Point in Engine Controls - 7.4L

  1. Disconnect the instrument cluster.
  2. Disconnect VCM connector C4.
  3. On vehicles with RPO UD4, disconnect multi-function alarm module connector C2.
  4. Connect a J 39200 DMM between instrument cluster connector cavity B14 for CKT 389 (DK GRN) and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

Connect a J 39200 DMM between instrument cluster connector cavity B14 and VCM connector C4 cavity 4 for CKT 389 (DK GRN). Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

Repair the short to ground in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VCM and the instrument cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Is the repair complete?

Repair the open in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VCM and the instrument cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

    •  Diagnostic Starting Point in Antilock Brake System
    •  Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check in Engine Controls - 6.5L

  1. Disconnect the instrument cluster.
  2. Disconnect the VSSB module.
  3. Disconnect powertrain control module (PCM) connector C2.
  4. Connect a J 39200 DMM between instrument cluster connector cavity B14 for CKT 389 (DK GRN) and ground. Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

Connect a J 39200 DMM between instrument cluster connector cavity B14 and VSSB module connector cavity 15 for CKT 389 (DK GRN). Refer to Circuit Testing in Wiring Systems.

Is continuity present?

Repair the short to ground in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VSSB module and the PCM or the instrument cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open in CKT 389 (DK GRN) between the VSSB module and the instrument cluster. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.
