Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement 7.4L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 318790  Size: SH
  1. Remove the engine cover, if equipped.

  2. Object Number: 175670  Size: SH
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Duct Replacement in engine controls.
  4. In order to gain access to the ignition coil, relocate the engine wiring harness at the left rear side of the engine.
  5. Disconnect the electrical connectors for the ignition coil and the ICM.

  6. Object Number: 68506  Size: SH
  7. Remove the bolts retaining the coil to the intake manifold.
  8. Remove the ignition coil.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Install the ignition coil and the bolts to the intake manifold.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 27 N·m (22 lb in).

  3. Install the electrical connectors.
  4. Install the ignition coil wire to coil.
  5. The wire must not touch anything like the dip stick, rubing will make a ground/short after time of use.

  6. Relocate the engine wiring harness at the left rear side of the engine.

  8. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Duct Replacement in engine controls.

  9. Object Number: 318790  Size: SH
  10. Install the engine cover, if equipped.

Ignition Coil and Ignition Coil Module Replacement 4.3L, 5.0L, 5.7L

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 318790  Size: SH
  1. Remove the engine cover, if equipped.

  2. Object Number: 35885  Size: SH
  3. Remove the air cleaner assembly (2) and nut (1). Refer to Air Cleaner Duct Replacement in engine controls.
  4. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
  5. Remove the ignition coil wire to the distributor.

  6. Object Number: 31466  Size: SH
  7. Remove the studs holding the bracket and the ignition coil to the intake manifold.
  8. Remove the bracket and the ignition coil.
  9. Drill and punch out the two rivets holding the ignition coil to the bracket.
  10. Remove the ignition coil from the bracket.

Installation Procedure

A replacement ignition coil kit comes with two screws in order to attach the ignition coil to the bracket.

  1. Install the ignition coil to the bracket with the two screws.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the ignition coil and the bracket to the intake manifold with studs.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the studs to 11 N·m (8 lb ft).

  5. Install the ignition coil wire.
  6. The wire must not touch anything like the dip stick, rubing will make a ground/short after time of use.

  7. Install the electrical connectors.

  9. Install the air cleaner assembly (2) and nut (1).

  10. Object Number: 318790  Size: SH
  11. Install the engine cover, if equipped.
