Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 172995  Size: SH
  1. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
  2. Remove the PCV valve and hose assembly from the valve rocker arm cover and the intake manifold.

  3. Object Number: 543569  Size: SH
  4. Disconnect the engine coolant temperature (ECT) gauge sensor electrical connector.
  5. Remove the ECT gauge sensor connector from the bracket.
  6. Remove the spark plug wires for the left side of the engine from the distributor cap.
  7. Remove the rear spark plug wire harness retainer from the EGR valve inlet pipe bracket.
  8. Remove the auxiliary evaporator tube from the A/C compressor, if equipped. Refer to Auxiliary Air Conditioning Evaporator Tube Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

  10. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  11. Remove the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.
  12. Discard the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.

  13. Object Number: 480519  Size: SH
  14. Remove the valve rocker arm cover.

  15. Object Number: 328573  Size: SH
  16. Remove the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  17. Discard the valve rocker arm cover gasket.
  18. Clean all sealing surfaces and the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 328573  Size: SH

    Important: Do not reuse the valve cover gasket or the valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets.

  1. Install the NEW valve rocker arm cover gasket into the groove of the valve rocker arm cover.
  2. Install the NEW valve rocker arm cover bolt grommets into the valve rocker arm cover.

  3. Object Number: 480519  Size: SH
  4. Install the valve rocker arm cover onto the cylinder head.

  5. Object Number: 328566  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Install the valve rocker arm cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the valve rocker arm cover bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  8. Install the auxiliary evaporator tube to the A/C compressor, if equipped. Refer to Auxiliary Air Conditioning Evaporator Tube Replacement in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.

  9. Object Number: 543569  Size: SH
  10. Connect the spark plug wires to the distributor cap.
  11. Install the rear spark plug wire harness retainer to the EGR valve inlet pipe bracket.
  12. Install the ECT gauge sensor electrical connector to the bracket.
  13. Connect the ECT gauge sensor electrical connector.

  15. Install the PCV valve and hose assembly in the valve rocker arm cover and to the intake manifold.
  16. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement in Interior Trim.
