Tools Required

    • J 22794 Spark Plug Port Adapter
    • J 38606 Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 5892-D Valve Spring Compressor
    • J 42073 Valve Stem Oil Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Left Side of Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Right Side .
  2. Remove the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  3. Object Number: 65039  Size: SH

    Caution: Wear safety glasses in order to avoid eye damage.

  4. Install the J 22794 into the spark plug hole.
  5. Apply compressed air in order to hold the valves in place.

  6. Object Number: 1964  Size: SH
  7. Install the valve rocker arm nut.
  8. Use the J 5892-D in order to compress the valve spring.

  9. Object Number: 218211  Size: SH
  10. Use the J 38606 if clearance does not permit use of J 5892-D .

  11. Object Number: 334505  Size: SH
  12. Remove the valve stem keys (1).
  13. Carefully release the valve spring tension.
  14. Remove the J 5892-D or the J 38606 .
  15. Remove the valve spring cap (2) and valve spring (3).
  16. Remove the valve stem oil seal (4).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 334505  Size: SH
  1. Select the proper valve stem oil seal for the specific valve guide.
  2. Install the valve spring (3) and the valve spring cap (2).

  3. Object Number: 1964  Size: SH
  4. Use the J 5892-D in order to compress the valve spring.

  5. Object Number: 218211  Size: SH
  6. Use the J 38606 if clearance does not permit use of J 5892-D .
  7. Install the valve stem keys.
  8. Use grease in order to hold the valve stem keys in place.
  9. Carefully release the valve spring pressure, making sure the valve stem keys stay in place.

  10. Object Number: 65039  Size: SH
  11. Remove the J 5892-D , or the J 38606 and the J 23590 .
  12. Install the spark plugs. Refer to Spark Plug Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  13. Install the valve rocker arm covers. Refer to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Left Side , or to Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement - Right Side .
