Removal Procedure
Important: Do not raise the engine by the crankshaft balancer to perform this service
procedure. Damage to the crankshaft balancer or the crankshaft may occur.
- Drain the engine oil.
Refer to
Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement
.
- Remove the oil level indicator. Refer to
Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement
.
- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to
Catalytic Converter Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- Remove the engine oil cooler lines. Refer to
Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- If equipped, disconnect the oil level sensor switch electrical
connector.
- If equipped, remove the oil level sensor switch.
- Remove the transmission cover bolts.
- Remove the transmission cover.
- Remove the oil pan bolts.
Important: The oil pan gasket is reusable if not cut or damaged.
- Rotate and remove the oil pan (1) and gasket (2).
Installation Procedure
Important: The oil pan must be installed within 5 minutes of the sealer being applied
or the sealer will begin to cure, causing an inadequate seal.
- Apply sealant GM U.S. P/N 12346286,
Canada P/N 10953472, to the side of the front (1)
and rear (2) crankshaft bearing caps, on both the left and right sides
(4 locations total).
- Install a NEW oil pan
gasket (2) into the oil pan groove, if required.
- Install the oil pan (1).
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the oil
pan bolts.
Tighten
- Tighten the oil pan bolts in sequence a first pass to 10 N·m
(89 lb in).
- Tighten the oil pan bolts in sequence a final pass to 25 N·m
(18 lb ft).
- Install the transmission
cover.
- Install the transmission cover bolts.
Tighten
Tighten the transmission cover bolts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).
- If equipped, install the oil level sensor switch.
Tighten
Tighten the oil level sensor switch to 14 N·m (10 lb ft).
- If equipped, connect the oil level sensor switch electrical connector.
- Install the engine oil cooler lines. Refer to
Engine Oil Cooler Hose/Pipe Replacement
in Engine Cooling.
- Install the catalytic converter. Refer to
Catalytic Converter Replacement
in Engine Exhaust.
- Install the oil level indicator. Refer to
Oil Level Indicator and Tube Replacement
.
- Fill the engine with oil. Refer to
