Removal Procedure

  1. Install the pin into the park brake lever. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Disabling in Parking Brake.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle with suitable safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  3. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  4. Remove the rear brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement .
  5. Remove the rear brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  6. Remove the rear wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .
  7. Remove the rear brake anchor pin.

  9. Remove the rear brake backing plate retaining bolts and washers.
  10. Remove the rear brake backing plate from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the rear brake backing plate.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the rear brake backing plate retaining bolts and washers.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the rear brake backing plate retaining bolts to 140 N·m (104 lb ft).

  5. Install the rear wheel cylinder. Refer to Wheel Cylinder Replacement .

  7. Lubricate the brake shoe backing plate, the adjusting screw threads, socket and socket face with a thin coat of high temperature silicone brake lubricant.
  8. Install the rear brake shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement .
  9. Adjust the rear brakes. Refer to Drum Brake Adjustment .
  10. Bleed the hydraulic brake system. Refer to Hydraulic Brake System Bleeding in Hydraulic Brakes.
  11. Remove the pin to the park brake lever. Refer to Parking Brake Cable Adjuster Enabling in Park Brake.
  12. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  13. Adjust the park brake if necessary. Refer to Park Brake Adjustment in Park Brake.
  14. Lower the vehicle.
  15. With the engine OFF, gradually apply the brake pedal approximately 2/3 of its travel distance.
  16. Slowly release the brake pedal.
  17. Wait 15 seconds, then repeat steps 12-13 until a firm brake pedal is obtained. This will properly seat the wheel cylinders and brake shoes.
