The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor responds to pressure changes in the intake manifold. The pressure changes occur based on the engine load. The MAP sensor has the following circuits:

The powertrain control module (PCM) supplies 5 volts to the MAP sensor on the 5-volt reference circuit. The PCM also provides a ground on the low reference circuit. The MAP sensor provides a signal to the PCM on the MAP sensor signal circuit which is relative to the pressure changes in the manifold. The PCM should detect a low signal voltage at a low MAP, such as during an idle or a deceleration. The PCM should detect a high signal voltage at a high MAP, such as the ignition is ON, with the engine OFF, or at a wide open throttle (WOT). The MAP sensor is also used in order to determine the barometric pressure (BARO). This occurs when the ignition switch is turned ON, with the engine OFF. The BARO reading may also be updated whenever the engine is operated at WOT. The PCM monitors the MAP sensor signal for voltage outside of the normal range.
The PCM calculates a predicted value for the MAP sensor based on the throttle position (TP) and the engine speed. The PCM then compares the predicted value to the actual MAP sensor signal. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) P0106 sets if the MAP sensor signal is not within the predicted range.
• | DTCs P0101, P0102, P0103, P0107, P0108, P0121, P0122, P0123, P0401, P0404, P0405, P0410, P0440, P0442, P0443, or P0446 are not set. |
• | The engine is running. |
• | The engine speed is between 400-5,000 RPM. |
• | Any change in the engine speed is less than 100 RPM. |
• | The traction control is not active. |
• | The throttle position is between 0-100 percent. |
• | Any change in the idle air is less than 10 g/s. |
• | Any change in the exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) position is less than 20 percent. |
• | The A/C compressor clutch is steady. |
• | The power steering is stable. |
• | The power take-off (PTO) is not active. |
• | The clutch switch state does not change. |
• | The brake switch state does not change. |
• | All of the above conditions are stable for 2 seconds. |
The actual MAP sensor signal is not within the predicted range for 1.5 seconds.
• | The control module illuminates the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the second consecutive ignition cycle that the diagnostic runs and fails. |
• | The control module records the operating conditions at the time the diagnostic fails. The first time the diagnostic fails, the control module stores this information in the Failure Records. If the diagnostic reports a failure on the second consecutive ignition cycle, the control module records the operating conditions at the time of the failure. The control module writes the operating conditions to the Freeze Frame and updates the Failure Records. |
• | The control module turns OFF the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) after 3 consecutive ignition cycles that the diagnostic runs and does not fail. |
• | A current DTC, Last Test Failed, clears when the diagnostic runs and passes. |
• | A history DTC clears after 40 consecutive warm-up cycles, if no failures are reported by this or any other emission related diagnostic. |
• | Clear the MIL and the DTC with a scan tool. |
• | Inspect for the following: |
- | Any restrictions in the MAP sensor vacuum source |
- | A missing or damaged MAP sensor seal |
- | Any disconnected, damaged, or incorrectly routed vacuum hoses |
- | Any vacuum leaks at the intake manifold |
- | Any vacuum leaks at the throttle body |

This step tests the MAP sensors ability to correctly indicate barometric pressure. The value shown for the MAP sensor varies with altitude. 103 kPa is the approximate barometric pressure (BARO) displayed at or near sea level.
This step tests the MAP sensors ability to respond to an increase in engine vacuum.
This step tests for a proper MAP sensor kPa with an applied vacuum.
