Brake Pads Replacement Delco 3400

Removal Procedure

The use of GM brake pad material will help to maintain a balance between the front and the rear brake performance. In addition, the use of GM brake pad material will provide the proper brake balance for the purposes of stopping distance and control over the full range of operating conditions. The installation of any front brake pads or rear brake shoe material with a performance different from that of the suggested GM replacement parts for this vehicle may change the intended brake balance of this vehicle.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the front brake caliper from the front brake rotor. Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement .

  3. Object Number: 142248  Size: SH
  4. Remove the front outboard brake pad. Use a flat-bladed tool to disengage the bottoms on the front brake pad from the holes in the front brake caliper housing.

  5. Object Number: 142254  Size: SH
  6. Remove the front inboard brake pad.

  7. Object Number: 167403  Size: SH

    Important: Do not attempt to polish away any corrosion.

  8. Replace any corroded caliper bolts, bushings, or sleeves.
  9. Replace any nicked or cut caliper bolt bushings or seals.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 156329  Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the front brake caliper, bushings, bolts and seals with Delco Silicone Lube GM P/N 18010909 or the equivalent.

  2. Object Number: 142254  Size: SH
  3. Install the front inboard brake pad, with the following procedure:
  4. 2.1. Snap the retainer ring into the front brake caliper piston.
    2.2. The front brake pad retainer spring is already staked to the brake pad.
    2.3. The front brake pad must lay flat against the front brake caliper piston.

  5. Install the front outboard brake pad with the wear indicator at the leading edge of the front brake pad during forward wheel rotation. The back of the front brake pad must lay flat against the front brake caliper.
  6. Install the front brake caliper onto the front brake rotor and check for firm pedal. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement .
  7. Important: Before moving the vehicle, pump the brake pedal until the pedal is firm. Check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder after pumping the brakes.

  8. Remove the safety stands and lower the vehicle.

  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Important: Do not disconnect the brake hose from the caliper.

  4. Remove the front brake caliper from the front brake rotor. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement .

  6. Remove the front outboard brake pad. Use a suitable flat-bladed tool to disengage the bottoms on the front brake pad from the holes in the front brake caliper housing.

  7. Object Number: 142254  Size: SH
  8. Remove the front inboard brake pad.

  9. Object Number: 167405  Size: SH

    Important:  Do not attempt to polish away any corrosion.

  10. Replace any corroded caliper bolts, bushings, or sleeves.
  11. Replace any nicked or cut caliper bolt bushings or seals.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the front brake caliper, bushings, bolts and seals with Delco Silicone Lube GM P/N 18010909 or the equivalent.

  3. Install the front inboard brake pad.
  4. • Snap the retainer ring into the front brake caliper piston.
    • The front brake pad retainer spring is already staked to the brake pad.
    • The front brake pad must lay flat against the front brake caliper piston.

  5. Install the front outboard brake pad with the wear indicator at the leading edge of the front brake pad during forward wheel rotation. The back of the front brake pad must lay flat against the front brake caliper.
  6. Install the front brake caliper onto the front brake rotor. Refer to Brake Caliper Replacement .
  7. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  8. Important: After lowering, but before moving, the vehicle, pump the brake pedal until the pedal is firm. Check the fluid level in the brake master cylinder after pumping the brakes.

  9. Remove the safety stands. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
