    • J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
    • J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)

Removal Procedure

    Caution: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.

  2. Object Number: 337571  Size: SH
  3. Remove the nut from the idler arm ball studs.
  4. Important: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

  5. Using the J 24319-B separate the idler arms from the relay rod.

  6. Object Number: 310182  Size: SH
  7. Remove the idler arm retaining nuts to disconnect the idler arm assembly (2) from the frame support (3).
  8. Clean the threads of the ball stud and the ball stud nut.
  9. Inspect the ball stud threads for damage.
  10. Inspect the ball stud seal for cuts or other damage.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  1. Connect the idler arm assembly (2) to the frame (3).
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the idler arm retaining bolts to 100 N·m (74 lb ft) + 40 degrees.

  3. Connect the relay rod to the idler arm ball stud.
  4. Make sure the seal is on the stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the J 29193 to 54 N·m (40 lb ft) in order to seat the tapers.

  5. Remove the tool.
  6. Install a new torque prevailing nut on the idler arm ball studs.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  8. Remove the safety stands.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
