    • J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (14mm)
    • J 29194 Steering Linkage Installer (12mm)

Removal Procedure

    Caution: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with safety stands.

  2. Object Number: 310189  Size: SH

    Important: Do not free the ball stud by using a pickle fork or a wedge-type tool. Damage to the seal or bushing may result.

  3. Remove the inner tie rod from the relay rod (4). Refer to Tie Rod Replacement .
  4. Remove the nuts from the idler arm (1) and connecting rod arm ball studs at the relay rod.

  5. Object Number: 643351  Size: SH
  6. Use the J 24319-B in order to remove the relay rod from the idler arm.
  7. Use the J 24319-B in order to remove the relay rod from the connecting rod.
  8. Remove the relay rod from the vehicle.
  9. Clean the threads on the ball stud and the ball stud nut.
  10. Inspect the threads on the tie rod and the tie rod end for damage.
  11. Inspect the ball stud threads for damage.
  12. Inspect the ball stud seals for excessive wear.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the relay rod (4) to the idler arm (1,6).
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the connecting rod to the relay rod. Ensure that the seal is on the stud.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the J 29193 , or the J 29194 to 54 N·m (40 lb ft) in order to seat the tapers.

  5. Remove the tool.
  6. Install the retaining nuts to the idler arms and the connecting rod. Use new torque prevailing nuts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  8. Install the inner tie rod to the relay rod. Refer to Tie Rod Replacement .
  9. Remove the safety stands.
  10. Lower the vehicle.
