    •  J 24319-B Universal Steering Linkage Puller
    •  J 29193 Steering Linkage Installer (12 mm)

Removal Procedure

Important: Use the proper tool in order to separate the ball studs.

  1. Raise the vehicle. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.

  2. Object Number: 375568  Size: SH
  3. Remove the prevailing torque nut (1) from the relay rod (2) ball stud at the pitman arm.
  4. Discard the prevailing torque nut (1).


    Object Number: 643351  Size: SH
  5. Use the J 24319-B in order to remove the connecting rod from the relay rod.
  6. Remove the prevailing torque nut from the connecting rod ball stud at the pitman arm.
  7. Discard the prevailing torque nut.

  8. Use the J 24319-B in order to remove the connecting rod from the pitman arm.
  9. Remove the connecting rod from the vehicle.
  10. Inspect the ball stud threads for damage.
  11. Inspect the ball stud seals for excessive wear.
  12. Clean the threads on the ball stud.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the connecting rod to the pitman arm.

  2. Object Number: 689037  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Use the J 29193 in order to seat the connecting rod ball stud to the pitman arm .
  4. Ensure that the seal is on the ball stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the J 29193 to 54 N·m (40 lb ft) in order to seat the tapers.

  5. Remove the J 29193 .

  6. Object Number: 310193  Size: SH
  7. Install the new prevailing torque nut (2) to the connecting rod (4) ball stud at the pitman arm.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).


    Object Number: 689037  Size: SH
  9. Use the J 29193 in order to seat the tapers at the connecting rod ball stud to the relay rod.
  10. Ensure that the seal is on the stud.

    Tighten
    Tighten the J 29193 to 54 N·m (40 lb ft) in order to seat the tapers.

  11. Remove the J 29193 .

  12. Object Number: 310189  Size: SH
  13. Install the new prevailing torque nut (3) to the ball stud.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  15. Install the grease fitting, if equipped.
  16. Grease the steering linkage.

  17. Remove the safety stands.
  18. Lower the vehicle.
  19. Check the wheel alignment. Refer to Wheel Alignment Measurement in Wheel Alignment.
