J 23028-A Coil Spring Remover

Removal Procedure

    Caution: To avoid any vehicle damage, serious personal injury or death when major components are removed from the vehicle and the vehicle is supported by a hoist, support the vehicle with jack stands at the opposite end from which the components are being removed and strap the vehicle to the hoist.

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist so that the control arms hang free.
  2. Caution: Floor jack must remain under the lower control arm during removal and installation to retain the lower control arm in position. Failure to do so could result in personal injury.

  3. Support the vehicle with suitable safety stands.
  4. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  6. Remove the stabilizer shaft link pins from the lower control arm.
  7. Remove the shock absorber. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement .
  8. Cradle the lower control arm at the control arm bushings using the J 23028-A secured to the end of a suitable jack.

  9. Object Number: 164998  Size: SH
  10. Raise the jack in order to relieve tension on the lower control arm pivot bolts.

  11. Object Number: 160821  Size: SH
  12. Remove the lower control arm pivot bolts and nuts.
  13. Lower the control arm by lowering the jack slowly to remove the coil spring.

  15. Remove the coil spring and the insulator (1).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 156981  Size: SH
  1. Install the coil spring and the insulator.
  2. • The coil spring is installed with the taper at the highest position, and a gripper notch at the lower position (2).
    • Align the bottom of the coil spring to the proper position in the lower control arm.
    • Make sure the spring insulator (1) is on top.
  3. Support the lower control arm at the control arm bushings using the J 23028-A .

  5. Raise the jack to install the control arm in place. Guide the control arm into place with a pry bar.

  6. Object Number: 160821  Size: SH

    Important: The lower control arm pivots bolts must be installed in the proper direction.

    The nuts must be tightened with the control arm at Z height. Refer to Trim Height Inspection in Suspension General Diagnosis.

  7. Install the new lower control arm pivot bolts and nuts.
  8. Remove the J 23028-A from the vehicle.
  9. Install the shock absorber. Refer to Shock Absorber Replacement .

  10. Object Number: 160503  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the stabilizer shaft link pin.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the link pin assembly retaining nut to 18 N·m (13 lb ft).

  13. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  14. Remove the safety stands.
  15. Lower the vehicle.
  16. Tighten the lower control arm pivot bolts.
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the lower control arm pivot bolts to 155 N·m (115 lb ft).
