Some customers may comment on a loud steering noise only when turning left. The noise may be described as a rubbing noise, groan, squawk, or ground out (but not a whine) and will be more common when accelerating and turning.
To duplicate this condition attempt the following steps:
• | Warm up the engine. This noise is dependent upon warm power steering fluid temperature. |
• | Put the vehicle in PARK and accelerate the engine to approximately 1500-2000 RPMs. |
• | Turn the steering wheel left to right from lock to lock at various rates of steering wheel rotation. DO NOT hold the wheel against the stops for long periods of time. |
• | The noise should be heard when the wheel is turning to the left, but may be intermittent. |
Replace the power steering gear assembly. Refer to the Power Steering Gear Replacement Non-Rack and Pinion Procedure in the Power Steering System sub-section of the Service Manual (SI Document ID #826931).
