Subject:Rear Axle Noise Product Feedback Request (Valid Until February 29, 2008)

Models:2008 Chevrolet Express
2008 GMC Savana

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

GM Engineering would like to receive product feedback on 2008 Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana vans. Engineering is looking for vehicles exhibiting noise from the rear axle assembly that have not been serviced previously for this concern. This noise may be either a gear whine or a bearing noise.

Recommendation/Instructions:

If your Service Department receives an 2008 Express or Savana with any type of axle noise, please document the customer complaint, and verify that the axle has not been serviced previously using GM VIS. If the repair technician (or other service department diagnostician) confirms that the noise concern is from the rear axle and determines that repair is needed, please call the following individual before beginning repair procedures:

Doug Stroud, Wentzville Assembly Plant (636) 327-2911 Please call between 6:00 AM and 3:00 PM Central Standard Time.

Please provide the caller's name, dealership name, phone number, vehicle VIN, axle code or part number, and mileage. If you are switched to voice-mail, feel free to leave a message with this information, and leave a request for a return phone call. If you do not receive a return call within one hour, do not delay repair of the customer's vehicle.

Note:  Your call may result in being provided a replacement axle assembly. We are seeking one complete axle assembly from a 1500 Series van, and one complete axle from a 2500/3500 Series van. You may receive a complete axle assembly on an exchange basis. Therefore, to allow accurate failure analysis, it is important that the axle not be disturbed.

Do not call after February 29, 2008. Thank You.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
