Observe the stop lamps while pressing the brake pedal.

Does the system operate normally?

Go to Testing for Electrical Intermittents

Is only one stop lamp inoperative?

Are all stop lamps inoperative?

While depressing the brake pedal, test for a voltage signal at the stop lamp switch signal terminal of the turn/hazard flasher module connector. Refer to Circuit Testing.

Is voltage present?

Test the supply voltage circuit of the inoperative lamp for high resistance, an open, or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs.

Test the ground circuit of the inoperative lamp for high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs.

Disconnect the stop lamp switch. Connect a 3-amp fused jumper wire between the battery positive voltage terminal and the stop lamp switch signal terminal of the stop lamp switch.

Do the stop lamps illuminate?

Test the battery positive circuit of the stop lamp switch for high resistance, an open or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs.

Test the stop lamp switch signal circuit of the stoplamp switch for a high resistance, an open or a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs.

Test the turn/stop lamp supply voltage circuit between the turn/hazard flasher module, body fuse block, and the underhood fuse block for a short to ground. Refer to Testing for Short to Ground and Wiring Repairs.

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the bulb or high mount stop lamp. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs.
