Clutch Pilot Bearing Installation without RPO HP2

Tools Required

J 38836 Bushing Installer and Clutch Arbor


    Object Number: 260131  Size: SH

    Important: The flywheel spacer, if applicable, must be removed prior to pilot bearing installation.

  1. Install a 5/8 inch washer (1) onto the J 38836 or equivalent.
  2. Install the new pilot bearing (2) onto the tool.

  3. Object Number: 490867  Size: SH
  4. Install the new pilot bearing into the crankshaft using the J 38836 .

  5. Object Number: 642288  Size: MH
  6. Inspect the clutch pilot bearing for proper installation.

    • J 8433-1 Puller Bar
    • J 45949 Pilot Bearing and Flywheel Locator Installer

    Object Number: 1277130  Size: SH
  1. Inspect a used flexplate locator for wear at the inside diameter (ID) area (1). Measure for oversize and out-of-round conditions. A locator with an ID area that exceeds 21.025 mm (0.828 in) must be replaced.
  2. Inspect a used flexplate locator for scoring or grooves (2) in the ID area. A locator with scoring or grooves may not properly align or position the torque converter. Locators with scoring or grooves in the ID area must be replaced.

  3. Object Number: 1277132  Size: SH
  4. Use the J 8433-1  (1) and the J 45949  (2) in order to install the locator (3) into the rear of the crankshaft.

  5. Object Number: 1277126  Size: MH
  6. Inspect the locator for proper installation. A properly installed locator should protrude no more than 8.4 mm (0.33 in) (a) from the rear of the crankshaft.
