Turn the ignition key to the OFF position.

Can the key be turned to the OFF position and be removed?

Go to Step 7

Verify the adjustment of the automatic transmission cable. Refer to the appropriate procedure:

    •  Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment for the 4L60-E/4L65-E/4L70-E transmission
    •  Range Selector Lever Cable Adjustment for the 6L50/6L80/6L90 transmission

Can the key be turned to the OFF position?

System OK

Go to Step 6

Inspect the automatic transmission control assembly and cable for damage.

Is the automatic transmission control assembly or cable damaged?

Go to Step 9

Inspect for a faulty lock cylinder.

Is the lock cylinder damaged?

Inspect the ignition lock cylinder case.

Is the case worn, damaged or loose?

Replace the automatic transmission control assembly. Refer to Transmission Control Replacement .
