Circuit/System Description

The transmission control module (TCM) provides B+ to the modulated main (MOD MAIN) pressure control solenoid, torque converter clutch (TCC) pressure control solenoid and pressure control solenoid 1 (PCS1) through a separate solid state device called high side driver 1 (HSD1). The TCM uses low side drivers to control the solenoids.

Conditions for Running the DTC

    • Battery voltage is greater than 9.0 V and less than 18 V.
    • Engine speed is greater than 200 RPM.
    • HSD1 is commanded on.

Conditions for Setting the DTC

P0657

This DTC sets when the HSD1 voltage is greater than 6 V and the TCM detects an open on 2 or more of the solenoids (MOD MAIN, TCC, or PCS1) that are connected to the HSD1.

P0658

This DTC sets when the HSD1 voltage is less than 6 V and the TCM detects a short to ground on 2 or more of the solenoids (MOD MAIN, TCC, or PCS1) that are connected to the HSD1.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets

P0657

    • The TCM requests the engine control module (ECM) to illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL).
    • While diagnostic response is active, if the shift selector is moved to NEUTRAL, the transmission will shift to NEUTRAL. If the shift selector is moved to REVERSE, the transmission will shift to REVERSE. If the shift selector is moved to a forward range, the transmission will shift to third range.
    • The TCM inhibits TCC engagement.
    • DTC P0657 is stored in TCM history.

P0658

    • The TCM requests the ECM to illuminate the MIL.
    • While diagnostic response is active, if the shift selector is moved to NEUTRAL, the transmission will shift to NEUTRAL. If the shift selector is moved to REVERSE, the transmission will shift to REVERSE. If the shift selector is moved to a forward range, the transmission will shift to third range.
    • The TCM inhibits TCC engagement.
    • DTC P0658 is stored in TCM history.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC

DTCs P0657 and P0658 are Type A DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification

  1. Ignition ON, engine OFF, command the Modulated Main Pres. Ctrl. Sol., the TCC Control Solenoid, and the PC Solenoid 1 ON and OFF with a scan tool. Observe the operation of the Line PC Sol. Pressure Command, TCC PC Solenoid Pressure Command, and PC Solenoid 1 Pressure Command parameters. The parameters should change from 0 kPa (0 psi) to 1600 kPa (232 psi).
  2. Operate the vehicle within the Conditions for Running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset. You may also operate the vehicle within the conditions that you observed from the Freeze Frame/Failure Records data.

Circuit/System Testing

  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the X175 harness connector at the transmission.
  2. Ignition ON, engine OFF, verify that a test lamp illuminates between the B+ circuit terminal L and ground.
  3. If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal S and the B+ circuit terminal L.
  5. Command the Modulated Main Pres. Ctrl. Sol ON and OFF with a scan tool and verify the Line PC Sol. Pressure Command parameter changes from 1600 kPa (232 psi) to 0 kPa (0 psi). The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  6. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
  7. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal M and the B+ circuit terminal L.
  8. Command the PC Solenoid 1 ON and OFF with a scan tool and verify the PC Sol. 1 Pressure Command parameter changes from 1600 kPa (232 psi) to 0 kPa (0 psi). The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  9. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
  10. Connect a test lamp between the control circuit terminal J and the B+ circuit terminal L.
  11. Command the TCC Control Solenoid ON and OFF with a scan tool and verify the TCC Sol. Pressure Command parameter changes from 1600 kPa (232 psi) to 0 kPa (0 psi). The test lamp should turn ON and OFF when changing between the commanded states.
  12. If the test lamp is always ON, test the control circuit for a short to ground. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
    If the test lamp is always OFF, test the control circuit for a short to voltage or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the TCM.
  13. Remove the transmission oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement.
  14. Test the transmission internal HSD1 B+ and PCS1, TCC, and MAIN MOD control circuits for a short to voltage, short to ground or an open/high resistance.
  15. If the circuits test normal, test the PCS1, TCC and MAIN MOD solenoids.

Component Testing

Static Testing

    Note: You must perform the Circuit/System Testing first.

  1. Ignition OFF, remove the PSC1, TCC, and MAIN MOD solenoids from the valve body. Refer to Control Valve Solenoid Replacement.
  2. Test for resistance between the following terminals:
  3. • Control circuit terminal 2 and B+ circuit terminal 1 of the PCS1 solenoid
    • Control circuit terminal 2 and B+ circuit terminal 1 of the TCC solenoid
    • Control circuit terminal B and B+ circuit terminal A of the MAIN MOD solenoid.
      Refer to Temperature Versus Resistance.
         ⇒ If not within the specified range, replace the affected solenoid or solenoids.

Repair Instructions

Repair Verification

If another DTC is present, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle and perform the appropriate diagnostic procedure.
