The transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor is a 2 wire sensor located in the pressure switch manifold (PSM). The transmission control module (TCM) supplies 5 V on the signal circuit and a ground circuit to the TFT sensor. The resistance of the TFT sensor decreases as the oil temperature increases. The TCM monitors the voltage drop across the TFT sensors and calculates the temperature of the transmission oil in the oil pan.
• | DTCs P0716, P0717, P0721, P0722, P0742, P2184 and P2185 are not active. |
• | Battery voltage is between 9-18 V. |
• | Engine speed is greater than 200 RPM. |
• | The TFT was between -40°C (-40°F) and 21°C (70°F) at startup. |
• | The engine coolant temperature (ECT) was at least 70°C (158°F) at startup and has increased by 15°C (27°F) since start up. |
• | The torque converter clutch (TCC) slip speed is 120 RPM or more for at least 5 minutes. |
• | TFT was between 115°C (239°F) and 150°C (302°F) at startup. |
• | ECT is at least 70°C (158°F) and has increased by 55°C (99°F) since start up. |
• | The TCC slip speed is 120 RPM or more for at least 5 minutes. |
No additional condition requirements.
• | Engine torque is greater than 150 N·m (110 lb ft). |
• | Vehicle speed is greater than 22 km/h (14 mph). |
• | Throttle is greater than 10.5 percent. |
• | Engine speed is greater than 500 RPM. |
• | ECT is between -39°C (-38°F) and 149°C (300°F). |
Induction air temperature (IAT) is not defaulted.
The TFT has not risen 2°C (4°F) since startup for 100 seconds and the vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph) for 300 seconds.
The TFT has not risen 3°C (5°F) since startup for 100 seconds and the vehicle speed is greater than 8 km/h (5 mph) for 300 seconds.
The TFT changes more than 20°C (36°F) in 7 seconds.
The TFT does not reach 20°C (68°F) within a period of time that varies with TFT at start up.
At startup when engine speed is greater than 500 RPM for 2 seconds and ECT is between -39°C (-38°F) and 50°C (122°F), if the difference between IAT and ECT is less than 6°C (11°F) and the difference between ECT and TFT is greater than 40°C (72°F), or if the difference between IAT an ECT is greater thane 6°C (11°F) and the difference between ECT and TFT is greater than 60°C (108°F).
• | The TCM uses a calibration default value for TFT. |
• | The TCM requests the ECM to illuminate the malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) on the second occurrence. |
• | DTC P0711 is stored in TCM history. |
DTC P0711 is a Type B DTC.
You may have to drive the vehicle in order to experience a condition.

Note: You must perform the Circuit/System Verification first.
⇒ | If not the specified value, test the TFT signal circuit and low reference circuit for a short to voltage, short to ground or an open/high resistance. If circuits test normal, replace the TCM. |
⇒ | If circuits test normal, test or replace the pressure switch manifold. |
Note: You must perform the Circuit/System Testing first.
⇒ | If not within the specified range, replace the pressure switch manifold, with thermistor. |
Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
