Power Steering Pump Replacement 4.8L, 5.3L, 6.0L, and 6.2L

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  2. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  3. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.
  4. Remove the engine shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
  5. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.

  7. Disconnect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the power steering pump assembly from underneath the vehicle.

  8. Object Number: 898607  Size: SH
  9. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp (5) and the power steering fluid cooler hose (4) from the power steering pump assembly (1).
  10. If equipped with hydroboost, disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose clamp (3) and disconnect the power brake booster outlet hose (2) from power steering pump assembly (1).

  11. Object Number: 346660  Size: SH
  12. Remove the power steering pump bracket bolt from the side of the engine.
  13. Remove the power steering pump bolts.
  14. Remove the power steering pump assembly from the vehicle.
  15. Transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install all transferable parts as needed.
  2. Install the power steering pump assembly to the vehicle.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.


    Object Number: 346660  Size: SH

    Important: Start all the bolts by hand before finalizing each torque.

  4. Install the power steering pump bracket bolt to the side of the engine.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the power steering pump bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose (4) and the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp (5) to the power steering pump assembly (1).
  9. If equipped with hydroboost, connect the power brake booster outlet hose (2) and the power brake booster outlet hose clamp (3) to the power steering pump assembly (1).

  10. Object Number: 898604  Size: SH
  11. Connect the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering pump assembly (1) from underneath the vehicle.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 32 N·m (24 lb ft).

  13. Clean any excess fluid power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  14. Connect the steering shaft coupling. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.
  15. Install the engine shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
  16. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  17. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Power Steering Pump Replacement 6.6L

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  2. Place a drain pan under the vehicle.

  3. Object Number: 1891139  Size: SH
  4. Remove the bolts (1) from the rear of the pump.

  5. Object Number: 698146  Size: SH
  6. Remove the bolts from the front of the pump bracket.
  7. Important: Note the location of the battery cables for reinstallation.

  8. Disconnect the negative battery clip from the power steering pump front bracket.

  9. Object Number: 898607  Size: SH
  10. Remove the power steering return hoses (2, 4) from the power steering pump.

  11. Object Number: 898604  Size: SH
  12. Remove the power steering pump from the accessory mounting bracket to gain access to the power brake booster inlet pipe.
  13. Remove the power brake booster inlet pipe from the power steering pump.
  14. Remove the power steering pump from the vehicle.
  15. Remove the power steering pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  16. Remove the front bracket from the power steering pump.
  17. Remove the rear bracket from the power steering pump.

Installation Procedure

    Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  1. Install the rear bracket to the power steering pump.
  2. Tighten
    Tighten the rear bracket retaining nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  3. Install the front bracket to the power steering pump.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the front bracket retaining nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.

  6. Object Number: 898604  Size: SH
  7. Install the power brake booster inlet pipe (2) to the power steering pump.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the fittings to 32 N·m (24 lb ft).

  9. Install the power steering return hoses and retaining clamps (3, 5) to the power steering pump.

  10. Object Number: 1891139  Size: SH
  11. Reposition the power steering pump to the accessory bracket and install the bolts (1) to the rear of the power steering pump.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the rear bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).


    Object Number: 698146  Size: SH
  13. Install the power steering pump front bracket bolts to the accessory bracket.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump front bracket retaining bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  15. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement.
  16. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.

Power Steering Pump Replacement 4.3L

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  2. Remove as much power steering fluid from the power steering fluid reservoir as possible.
  3. Disconnect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.
  4. Remove the engine shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
  5. Place drain pans under the vehicle as needed.

  7. Disconnect the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp and the power steering fluid cooler hose from the power steering pump assembly.

  8. Object Number: 288833  Size: SH
  9. Remove the power steering pump rear bracket nuts.

  10. Object Number: 288829  Size: SH
  11. Remove the power steering pump bolts.

  12. Object Number: 188295  Size: SH
  13. Remove the power steering pump bracket bolts and nut.
  14. Pull the power steering pump bracket forward.
  15. Separate the power steering pump assembly from the power steering pump bracket.

  16. Object Number: 898604  Size: SH
  17. Remove the power steering gear inlet hose (2) from the power steering pump assembly (1).
  18. Remove the power steering pump assembly from the vehicle.
  19. Transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

  1. Position the power steering pump assembly in the vehicle with the power steering pump bracket.

  2. Object Number: 898604  Size: SH
  3. Install the power steering gear inlet hose (2) to the power steering pump assembly (1).
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the fitting to 32 N·m (24 lb ft).


    Object Number: 188295  Size: SH
  5. Install the power steering pump bracket bolts and nut.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts and nut to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).


    Object Number: 288829  Size: SH
  7. Install the power steering pump bolts.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).


    Object Number: 288833  Size: SH
  9. Install the power steering pump rear bracket nuts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the nuts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).


    Object Number: 395852  Size: SH
  11. Connect the power steering fluid cooler hose and the power steering fluid cooler hose clamp to the power steering pump assembly.
  12. Clean any excess power steering fluid from the vehicle and remove the drain pans.
  13. Connect the steering shaft coupling from the steering gear. Refer to Steering Shaft Coupling Replacement.
  14. Install the engine shield. Refer to Engine Shield Replacement.
  15. Install the power steering pump pulley. Refer to Power Steering Pump Pulley Replacement.
  16. Fill and bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
  17. Program the power steering control module. Refer to Control Module References.
