Subject:Trailer Hitch Insert-Product Update

2007 GMC Sierra
HD Models

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

This is a product information update. For 2007 model year, the new HD pickup trucks equipped with RPO Z82 (Heavy Duty Trailering Package) come with a two inch metal insert/adapter that fits into the trailer hitch receiver. Initially, Pontiac Assembly (E in vin position # 11) shipped trucks with the insert already in the receiver secured with bolt and cotter pin and band tied to prevent theft.

Recommendation/Instructions:

As of 5/7/07, both Pontiac and Flint assembly plants have placed the hitch insert/adapter, bolt and cotter pin in the loose parts bag inside the vehicle.

We have had some reports of theft of the bolt and cotter pin, which are standard size and fit many applications. We would recommend that dealers place the insert/adaptor, bolt and pin (leave in original bubble wrap) in the glove box and advise customers that they are in the glove box at time of delivery.

Note: Potential for the item to be relocated from loose parts bag directly into glove box at the assembly plants and for bubble wrap to be eliminated in near future.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
