CUSTOMER SATISFACTION CAMPAIGN
GENERAL MOTORS HAS DECIDED THAT CERTAIN 1998 GMC ENVOYS MAY EXHIBIT A CONDITION WHERE THE LOAD LEVELING HEIGHT SENSING DEVICE MALFUNCTIONS RESULTING IN RAISING THE REAR OF THE VEHICLE ABOUT 6 INCHES, AND/OR THE COMPRESSOR WILL SWITCH ON AND RUN CONTINUOUSLY.
TO PREVENT THE POSSIBILITY OF THIS CONDITION OCCURRING, DEALERS ARE TO INSTALL A NEW SENSOR KIT.
VEHICLES INVOLVED
INVOLVED ARE CERTAIN 1998 GMC ENVOYS BUILT WITHIN THE FOLLOWING VIN BREAKPOINTS:
YEAR DIVISION MODEL PLANT CODE FROM THROUGH 1998 GMC ENVOY MORAINE "2" SOP W2954321
INVOLVED VEHICLES HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED BY VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER. COMPUTER LISTINGS CONTAINING THE COMPLETE VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER, CUSTOMER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA HAVE BEEN PREPARED, AND ARE BEING FURNISHED TO INVOLVED DEALERS WITH THE CAMPAIGN BULLETIN. THE CUSTOMER NAME AND ADDRESS DATA FURNISHED WILL ENABLE DEALERS TO FOLLOW-UP WITH CUSTOMERS INVOLVED IN THIS CAMPAIGN. DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
ALL UNSOLD NEW VEHICLES IN DEALERS' POSSESSION AND SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN MUST BE HELD AND INSPECTED/REPAIRED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN BEFORE CUSTOMERS TAKE POSSESSION OF THESE VEHICLES.
DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD.

THIS COULD BE DONE BY MAILING TO SUCH CUSTOMERS A COPY OF THE APPROPRIATE DIVISIONAL CUSTOMER LETTER ACCOMPANYING THIS BULLETIN. CAMPAIGN FOLLOW-UP CARDS SHOULD NOT BE USED FOR THIS PURPOSE, SINCE THE CUSTOMER MAY NOT AS YET HAVE RECEIVED THE NOTIFICATION LETTER.
IN SUMMARY, WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN ENTERS YOUR VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IS IN YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE, PLEASE TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE SELLING OR RELEASING THE VEHICLE.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
RELAY REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE.
2. REMOVE THE TAIL GATE HEADER GARNISH MOLDING (FIGURE 1), DOOR SILL TRIM PLATE (FIGURE 2), AND THE RIGHT REAR BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL (FIGURE 3). REFER TO BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT IN INTERIOR TRIM SECTION 10A4 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-1).
3. DISCONNECT AND REMOVE THE ALC RELAY AND WIRE HARNESS AND DISCARD (FIGURE 4).
RELAY INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. INSTALL AND CONNECT THE ALC RELAY AND WIRING HARNESS (FIGURE 4) AND ON/OFF SWITCH (FIGURE 7) IN THE ACCESSORY INFLATOR CONTROL PANEL. REFER TO THE ALC SECTION 3 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP).
2. DO NOT RE-INSTALL THE TAIL GATE HEADER GARNISH MOLDING, DOOR SILL TRIM PLATE, AND THE RIGHT REAR BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL (FIGURES 1, 2, AND 3) UNTIL AFTER THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK IS COMPLETED.
HEIGHT SENSOR ASSEMBLY REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT THE VEHICLE.
2. REMOVE THE ALC SENSOR LINK (FIGURE 5, ITEM 1) FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL BRACKET BALL STUD.
3. REMOVE THE ALC SENSOR LINK BALL STUD BRACKET FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL (FIGURE 5, ITEM 2), AND DISCARD THE BALL STUD BRACKET.
4. DISCONNECT THE ALC SENSOR ASSEMBLY ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIGURE 6, ITEM 1) AT THE SPARE TIRE CROSS MEMBER. USING A 10 MM SOCKET, REMOVE THE MOUNTING NUTS FROM THE ALC SENSOR ASSEMBLY FROM THE BRACKET (FIGURE 6, ITEM 2) AT THE SPARE TIRE CROSS MEMBER, AND DISCARD THE ALC SENSOR AND HARNESS ASSEMBLY. DO NOT REMOVE THE MOUNTING BRACKET FROM THE SPARE TIRE CROSS MEMBER.
HEIGHT SENSOR ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION
1. CONNECT THE ALC ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIGURE 6, ITEM 1); BE SURE TO ENGAGE THE CONNECTOR AND CHRISTMAS TREE FASTENER INTO THE BRACKET ASSEMBLY. INSTALL THE MOUNTING NUTS (3) TO THE ALC SENSOR BOLTS TO THE CROSS MEMBER BRACKET AND TORQUE TO 3.5 NM (31 IN.LB.).
2. INSTALL THE ALC SENSOR BALL STUD BRACKET TO THE REAR AXLE (FIGURE 5, ITEM 2). TORQUE THE BALL STUD BRACKET BOLT TO THE REAR AXLE COVER TO 27 NM (20 FT.LB.).
3. DO NOT CONNECT THE LINK FROM THE ALC SENSOR ARM TO THE BALL STUD ON THE DIFFERENTIAL BRACKET; WHICH WAS ADDED IN STEP 2 ABOVE. AT THIS POINT, FREE MOVEMENT OF THE ALC SENSOR ARM WILL BE REQUIRED IN THE FUNCTIONAL SYSTEM TEST WHICH FOLLOWS.
4. MANUALLY ROTATE THE ALC SENSOR ARM UPWARD AS CLOSE TO THE VEHICLE FLOOR AS POSSIBLE. USE A LARGE RUBBER BAND (APPROX. 6-7 INCHES LONG), INSTALL ONE END OVER THE SENSOR ARM (FIGURE 8, ITEM 1) AND WRAP IT AROUND OVER THE TOP OF THE SENSOR BRACKET (FIGURE 8, ITEM 2), AND DOWN AROUND OVER TOP OF THE ONE SCREW THAT IS NOT USED AS A MOUNTING POINT TO THE SENSOR BRACKET (FIGURE 8, ITEM 3). THE ALC SENSOR ARM SHOULD MAINTAIN ITS POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING LOWERED AND PREPARED FOR THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF THE ALC SYSTEM.
5. LOWER THE VEHICLE.
6. INSTALL THE 25 AMP FUSE FOR THE LD LEV IN THE FUSE BLOCK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, IF THE FUSE WAS PREVIOUSLY REMOVED IN THE INTERIM PROCEDURE.
FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF THE ALC SYSTEM
1. CONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
2. TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE RUN POSITION.
3. RAISE AND SUPPORT THE VEHICLE IN A TRIM LEVEL POSITION. THE REAR SUSPENSION SHOULD BE UNSPRUNG, REAR WHEELS HANGING, AND THE VEHICLE SUPPORTED BY THE FRAME.
4. WITH THE ALC SENSOR ARM RUBBER BANDED IN THE UPWARD POSITION, THE SHOCKS SHOULD BE INFLATING OR INFLATED (APPROX. 60 SECONDS AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED ON). IF THE SHOCKS FAIL TO INFLATE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
5. AFTER SUCCESSFUL SHOCK INFLATION, REMOVE THE RUBBER BAND HOLDING THE ARM UP, AND ATTACH THE LINK FROM THE ALC SENSOR ARM TO THE BALL STUD ON THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL BALL STUD BRACKET (FIGURE 1, ITEM 2).
6. APPROXIMATELY 20 SECONDS AFTER THE ALC SENSOR ARM IS ROTATED DOWN FOR ATTACHMENT OF THE LINK TO THE DIFFERENTIAL BALL STUD BRACKET IN STEP 5, THE SYSTEM EXHAUST VALVE WILL TURN ON FOR 20 SECONDS ALLOWING SOME AIR TO ESCAPE FROM THE LEVELING SHOCKS. THE COMPRESSOR SHOULD NOW TURN ON AND RUN FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS (AIR REPLENISHMENT CYCLE, ARC). WHEN THE COMPRESSOR SHUTS OFF, THE SYSTEM EXHAUST VALVE WILL TURN ON, ALLOWING AIR TO BE EXHAUSTED FROM THE REAR LEVELING SHOCKS. CHECK THE REAR LEVELING SHOCKS TO ENSURE THAT AIR IS BEING BLED OFF FROM THE RUBBER LEVELING SHOCK BLADDERS. A MAXIMUM OF 410 SECONDS (6.8 MINUTES) AFTER THE COMPRESSOR SHUTS OFF, THE EXHAUST VALVE WILL CLOSE. THE LEVELING SHOCK BLADDERS SHOULD HAVE MINIMUM AIR LEFT IN THEM AT THIS TIME. IF THE SHOCKS FAIL TO DEFLATE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
7. LOWER THE VEHICLE.
8. ACCESS THE ACCESSORY INFLATION CONTROL PANEL LOCATED IN THE RIGHT REAR INTERIOR TRIM PANEL. PRESS THE AUXILIARY INFLATION ON BUTTON AND VERIFY THAT AIR IS BEING SUPPLIED TO THE INFLATION VALVE LOCATED ABOVE THE ON/OFF BUTTONS (FIGURE 7). IF THE AIR IS NOT BEING SUPPLIED TO THE AUXILIARY VALVE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
9. PRESS THE AUXILIARY INFLATION OFF BUTTON AND VERIFY THAT THE AIR IS NO LONGER BEING SUPPLIED TO THE AUXILIARY AIR INFLATION VALVE LOCATED ABOVE THE ON/OFF BUTTONS (FIGURE 7). IF AIR CONTINUES TO BE SUPPLIED TO THE AUXILIARY VALVE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
10. TURN THE IGNITION KEY OFF. THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK IS COMPLETE.
11. RE-INSTALL THE TAIL GATE HEADER GARNISH MOLDING, DOOR SILL TRIM PLATE, AND THE RIGHT REAR BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL (FIGURES 1, 2, AND 3).
12. INSTALL THE GM CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.

ALL UNSOLD NEW VEHICLES IN DEALER'S POSSESSION AND SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN MUST BE HELD AND INSPECTED/REPAIRED PER THE SERVICE PROCEDURE OF THIS CAMPAIGN BULLETIN BEFORE CUSTOMERS TAKE POSSESSION OF THESE VEHICLES.
DEALERS ARE TO SERVICE ALL VEHICLES SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN AT NO CHARGE TO CUSTOMERS, REGARDLESS OF MILEAGE, AGE OF VEHICLE, OR OWNERSHIP, FROM THIS TIME FORWARD.
CUSTOMERS WHO HAVE RECENTLY PURCHASED VEHICLES SOLD FROM YOUR VEHICLE INVENTORY, AND FOR WHICH THERE IS NO CUSTOMER INFORMATION INDICATED ON THE DEALER LISTING, ARE TO BE CONTACTED BY THE DEALER. ARRANGEMENTS ARE TO BE MADE TO MAKE THE REQUIRED CORRECTION ACCORDING TO THE INSTRUCTIONS CONTAINED IN THIS BULLETIN. IN SUMMARY, WHENEVER A VEHICLE SUBJECT TO THIS CAMPAIGN ENTERS YOUR VEHICLE INVENTORY, OR IS IN YOUR DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE IN THE FUTURE, YOU MUST TAKE THE STEPS NECESSARY TO BE SURE THE CAMPAIGN CORRECTION HAS BEEN MADE BEFORE SELLING OR RELEASING THE VEHICLE.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
RELAY REMOVAL
1. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY NEGATIVE CABLE.
2. REMOVE THE TAILGATE HEADER GARNISH MOULDING (FIGURE 1), DOOR SILL TRIM PLATE (FIGURE 2), AND THE RIGHT REAR BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL (FIGURE 3). REFER TO BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL REPLACEMENT IN INTERIOR TRIM SECTION 10A4 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-1).
3. DISCONNECT AND REMOVE THE ALC RELAY AND WIRE HARNESS AND DISCARD (FIGURE 4).
RELAY INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. INSTALL AND CONNECT THE ALC RELAY AND WIRING HARNESS (FIGURE 4) AND ON/OFF SWITCH (FIGURE 7) IN THE ACCESSORY INFLATOR CONTROL PANEL. REFER TO THE ALC SECTION 3 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP).
2. DO NOT REINSTALL THE TAILGATE HEADER GARNISH MOULDING, DOOR SILL TRIM PLATE, AND THE RIGHT REAR BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL (FIGURES 1, 2, AND 3) UNTIL AFTER THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK IS COMPLETED.
HEIGHT SENSOR ASSEMBLY REMOVAL PROCEDURE
1. RAISE AND SUITABLY SUPPORT THE VEHICLE.
2. REMOVE THE ALC SENSOR LINK (FIGURE 5, ITEM 1) FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL BRACKET BALL STUD.
3. REMOVE THE ALC SENSOR LINK BALL STUD BRACKET FROM THE REAR DIFFERENTIAL (FIGURE 5, ITEM 2), AND DISCARD THE BALL STUD BRACKET.
4. DISCONNECT THE ALC SENSOR ASSEMBLY ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIGURE 6, ITEM 1) AT THE SPARE TIRE CROSS MEMBER. USING A 10MM SOCKET, REMOVE THE MOUNTING NUTS FROM THE ALC SENSOR ASSEMBLY FROM THE BRACKET (FIGURE 6, ITEM 2) AT THE SPARE TIRE CROSS MEMBER, AND DISCARD THE ALC SENSOR AND HARNESS ASSEMBLY. DO NOT REMOVE THE MOUNTING BRACKET FROM THE SPARE TIRE CROSS MEMBER.
HEIGHT SENSOR ASSEMBLY INSTALLATION
1. CONNECT THE ALC ELECTRICAL CONNECTOR (FIGURE 6, ITEM 1), BE SURE TO ENGAGE THE CONNECTOR AND CHRISTMAS TREE FASTENER INTO THE BRACKET ASSEMBLY. INSTALL THE MOUNTING NUTS (3) TO THE ALC SENSOR BOLTS TO THE CROSS MEMBER BRACKET AND TORQUE TO 3.5 N M (31 IN. LB.).
2. INSTALL THE ALC SENSOR BALL STUD BRACKET TO THE REAR AXLE (FIGURE 5, ITEM 2). TORQUE THE BALL STUD BRACKET BOLT TO THE REAR AXLE COVER TO 27 N M (20 FT. LB.).
3. DO NOT CONNECT THE LINK FROM THE ALC SENSOR ARM TO THE BALL STUD ON THE DIFFERENTIAL BRACKET; WHICH WAS ADDED IN STEP 2 ABOVE. AT THIS POINT, FREE MOVEMENT OF THE ALC SENSOR ARM WILL BE REQUIRED IN THE FUNCTIONAL SYSTEM TEST WHICH FOLLOWS.
4. MANUALLY ROTATE THE ALC SENSOR ARM UPWARD AS CLOSE TO THE VEHICLE FLOOR AS POSSIBLE. USE A LARGE RUBBER BAND (APPROX. 152MM-178MM [cent ]6-7 INCHES| LONG), INSTALL ONE END OVER THE SENSOR ARM (FIGURE 8, ITEM 1) AND WRAP IT AROUND OVER THE TOP OF THE SENSOR BRACKET (FIGURE 8, ITEM 2), AND DOWN AROUND OVER TOP OF THE ONE SCREW THAT IS NOT USED AS A MOUNTING POINT TO THE SENSOR BRACKET (FIGURE 8, ITEM 3). THE ALC SENSOR ARM SHOULD MAINTAIN ITS POSITION WHILE THE VEHICLE IS BEING LOWERED AND PREPARED FOR THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF THE ALC SYSTEM.
5. LOWER THE VEHICLE.
6. INSTALL THE 25 AMP FUSE FOR THE LD LEV IN THE FUSE BLOCK IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT, IF THE FUSE WAS PREVIOUSLY REMOVED IN THE INTERIM PROCEDURE.
FUNCTIONAL CHECK OF THE ALC SYSTEM
1. CONNECT THE NEGATIVE BATTERY CABLE.
2. TURN THE IGNITION KEY TO THE "RUN" POSITION.
3. RAISE AND SUPPORT THE VEHICLE IN A TRIM LEVEL POSITION. THE REAR SUSPENSION SHOULD BE UNSPRUNG, REAR WHEELS HANGING, AND THE VEHICLE SUPPORTED BY THE FRAME.
4. WITH THE ALC SENSOR ARM RUBBER BANDED IN THE UPWARD POSITION, THE SHOCKS SHOULD BE INFLATING OR INFLATED (APPROX. 60 SECONDS AFTER THE VEHICLE IS TURNED ON). IF THE SHOCKS FAIL TO INFLATE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
5. AFTER SUCCESSFUL SHOCK INFLATION, REMOVE THE RUBBER BAND HOLDING THE ARM UP, AND ATTACH THE LINK FROM THE ALC SENSOR ARM TO THE BALL STUD ON THE REAR AXLE DIFFERENTIAL BALL STUD BRACKET (FIGURE 1, ITEM 2).
6. APPROXIMATELY 20 SECONDS AFTER THE ALC SENSOR ARM IS ROTATED DOWN FOR ATTACHMENT OF THE LINK TO THE DIFFERENTIAL BALL STUD BRACKET IN STEP 5, THE SYSTEM EXHAUST VALVE WILL TURN ON FOR 20 SECONDS, ALLOWING SOME AIR TO ESCAPE FROM THE LEVELLING SHOCKS. THE COMPRESSOR SHOULD NOW TURN ON AND RUN FOR APPROXIMATELY 5 SECONDS (AIR REPLENISHMENT CYCLE, ARC). WHEN THE COMPRESSOR SHUTS OFF, THE SYSTEM EXHAUST VALVE WILL TURN ON, ALLOWING AIR TO BE EXHAUSTED FROM THE REAR LEVELLING SHOCKS. CHECK THE REAR LEVELLING SHOCKS TO ENSURE THAT AIR IS BEING BLED OFF FROM THE RUBBER LEVELLING SHOCK BLADDERS. A MAXIMUM OF 410 SECONDS (6.8 MINUTES) AFTER THE COMPRESSOR SHUTS OFF, THE EXHAUST VALVE WILL CLOSE. THE LEVELLING SHOCK BLADDERS SHOULD HAVE MINIMUM AIR LEFT IN THEM AT THIS TIME. IF THE SHOCKS FAIL TO DEFLATE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
7. LOWER THE VEHICLE.
8. ACCESS THE ACCESSORY INFLATION CONTROL PANEL LOCATED IN THE RIGHT REAR INTERIOR TRIM PANEL. PRESS THE AUXILIARY INFLATION ON BUTTON AND VERIFY THAT AIR IS BEING SUPPLIED TO THE INFLATION VALVE LOCATED ABOVE THE ON/OFF BUTTONS (FIGURE 7). IF THE AIR IS NOT BEING SUPPLIED TO THE AUXILIARY VALVE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98-ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
9. PRESS THE AUXILIARY INFLATION OFF BUTTON AND VERIFY THAT THE AIR IS NO LONGER BEING SUPPLIED TO THE AUXILIARY AIR INFLATION VALVE LOCATED ABOVE THE ON/OFF BUTTONS (FIGURE 7). IF AIR CONTINUES TO BE SUPPLIED TO THE AUXILIARY VALVE, REFER TO THE SUSPENSION SECTION OF THE SERVICE MANUAL (GMT/98- ST-PNP) FOR FURTHER DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURES.
10. TURN THE IGNITION KEY OFF. THE FUNCTIONAL CHECK IS COMPLETE.
11. REINSTALL THE TAILGATE HEADER GARNISH MOULDING, DOOR SILL TRIM PLATE, AND THE RIGHT REAR BODY SIDE TRIM PANEL (FIGURES 1, 2, AND 3).
12. INSTALL CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL.

THIS INFORMATION MAY BE INSERTED WITH A TYPEWRITER OR A BALL POINT PEN.
